Sean McDermott should be Coach of the Year

Coach Tuesday

Philly has 3 losses just like us.  We have a better point differential and we played a much harder schedule.

McD  had to overcome a lot with injuries, scheduling and weather issues, and this situation with Hamlin - which tested his leadership beyond a normal football season.

I think two factors help voters in choosing coach of the year. One is overachieving and the other is the team looking to be ready for a deep playoff run at the end of the season.   I think it goes to Shanahan in San Francisco.  He's got his team poised to make a deep playoff run with a third string 7the round draft pick at QB.  Pederson and Daboll have made a strong case, but I don't think they go too far in the playoffs if they make it there at all.  I like McDermott and think he should get consideration, but the Bills were widely expected to contend for a Super Bowl, and aside from the psychological challenges of dealing with Damar Hamlin having cardiac arrest have not suffered more than the expected injury issues.  It's tough to overachieve when you start out with those expectations, and as I said, I think overachieving weighs heavily in the minds of voters.

As some of you know I’ve been pretty critical of McD.  I’ve called him a turnaround specialist but not a championship coach, have criticized his approach to roster construction, and have been displeased (to say the least) with some of the coaching strategy (X’s and O’s) and gameday decision-making.  I thought he was a bit of a phony; I may have even referred to him as a gym teacher.

And while prior to this weekend there certainly were some challenges to navigate this season like a slew of injuries, a blizzard relocation, and some funky scheduling quirks, those things didn’t strike me as too far beyond the norm for an NFL team and its head coach.

That all changed for me this week.  First it was watching him pace the sideline when Damar was on the ground - you could see him muttering to himself (“okay, okay, okay”), as he tried to figure out how to lead a group of men through an unprecedented situation on the national stage.  He collected himself and took his team off of the field.  Since then, the stories that have come out - McD telling Taylor he needed to be at the hospital instead of coaching the rest of the game, and just generally staying calm and putting his players first - have just floored me.

Sean McDermott is the embodiment of leadership.  And great leadership - the good kind (the reluctant kind IMO) - is both rare and difficult.  He is the ultimate leader of men and there is no one more deserving of NFL Coach of the Year than him.  Not that I have a vote, but if I did, it would be a no-brainer choice.  No matter how the season ends up.  If Nick Siriani wins Coach of the Year over Sean McDermott, the whole thing is a joke.

That is all.  Off my soapbox.

HOLY S**T YOU DON"T WANT TO FIRE HIM ??? SIR PLEASE STAY AS CLOSE TO THAT PIPE AS YOU CAN IT SEEMS TO HAVE CALMED YOU DOWN .

I can't for the life of me understand how people like you can follow this team as long as you have to go through the SEVENTEEN YR drought with all the different coaches & losing & finally get a guy like McD & Beane and still B**CH about them it baffles me !!

I would imagine you were one that also wanted Beane fired too . Every season they have had this team in the play offs and and your still not happy i just don't get it at all !!!!!!!!!!!

Well let's hope that you stay with the mind set because i for one hope Beane & McD both retire as employees of the Buffalo Bills ...

Sean should have received COY years ago for fixing a perennially broken organization and maintaining the turn around, the guy has been by passed by others, some who were not as worthy, jmo.

GO BILLS!!!

so he should get coach of the year just because he was concerned about an injured player? that makes no sense. he's been a terrible coach and i hope he's fired the minute the season ends and we hire sean peyton

Sean Payton (60%) has a worse playoff appearance record than Sean McDermott (80%) and he had a Drew Brees with at least 6 to 19 years experience his entire tenure. McDermotts single season missing the post season was Allen's rookie year.

There is no reason to believe Payton would do better outside of grass is always greener on the other side. What we don't have will always be attractive to you guys for some reason, but sorry, the grass is pretty green over here so i think we will just stay put.

Ohhhh ok. So because I don’t like his coaching and want a championship that means I live in my moms basement? What a great take

Well then…,

So in your mind, all coaches like Andy Reid etc suck except for the one time they won?

Would you care to further extrapolate your stance that “he’s been a terrible coach” with some evidence?

You can't really believe this. There is 0% chance of this happening.

I know reading comprehension isn’t isn’t your thing but this is a new low point for you.

The Bills will win the Super Bowl and McDermott is the coach of the year.

Pretty sure it gets voted on before the SB. Could be wrong?

and he definitely is in the running. Lot of really good candidates though. Harbaugh deserves to be up there with their injuries. Peterson could be if the Jags make the playoffs. Tomlin does too. Campbell and O’Connell (frauds but still) also are in the running. I think what will “hurt” McDermott is the Bills were the SB favorites before the season and have been relatively healthy. That said, he deserves so much credit for being a great leader and sounds like the perfect guy for this team.

Don, I agree he was snubbed in 2020, and even 2021.  They vote on these things before the playoffs and the hand McD has made it through this year is admirable.  I too don’t have a vote, but sgree he deserves it.  If we win Sunday, and we will he’ll have another 13-3 season.

asking for a friend,

The ring culture is so stupid. It’s why nba players join stacked teams so they can win a ring. But as crazy as it is, Reid used to get destroyed for not winning a SB. McDermott is a very good coach and we are lucky to have him. However, you weirdly get punished for being a good coach/ player if you don’t win a championship. Very strange.

True, it often goes to a coach that turns around a bad or mediocre team.  It does not have to, and if you look at it many of those winners did not sustain the high performance.   Vrabel won it last year, Stafanski the year prior.  Both are struggling with mediocre teams - one turn around season is nice but it should not be the sole criteria.

McD also turned around a team that is still in the elite class of the league, climbing up without regression.  He overcame huge obstacles this year.   McD should win in a landslide.

Yet some are awarded with lesser accomplishments, sadly, it’s more of a fashion show / popularity contest than an award based on the nitty gritty and merit, as it should be.

If voters consider team performance over a multi-year period, I agree.  Is there a precedent for them doing that?
