honestly, in live action, who the heck knows how much made it from the stadium to NY in the first 5 minutes.

decision makers on the scale of cancelling a game may have been watching on tv trying to get glimpses of what was happening, and likely didn’t even get first phone calls until the ambulance was dispatched

You've been the voice of reason here.

https://ksi.uconn.edu/emergency-conditions/cardiac-conditions/commotio-cordis/

"Commotio Cordis refers to the sudden arrhythmic death caused by a low/mild chest wall impact.  Commotio Cordis is seen mostly in athletes between the ages of 8 and 18 who are partaking in sports with projectiles such as baseballs, hockey pucks, or lacrosse balls.  These projectiles can strike the athletes in the middle of the chest with a low impact but enough to cause the heart to enter an arrhythmia. Martial arts is a sport in which a strike of a hand can also cause the heart to change it’s rhythm.  Without immediate CPR and defibrillation the prognosis of commotio cordis is not very good.  This condition is extremely dangerous with rare survival."

Not all workplaces are created equal.

I think even then in a workplace, the foreman or lead person on the floor may be saying "OK everyone get back to work" because he or she doesn't know what else to say or do.  But then higher authorities will make changes, but it takes some time when dealing with unprecedented circumstances.

The ref saying 5 minutes doesn't know what else to say.

Yea that’s probably true and it takes time to coordinate with the nflpa and come out with a statement too

Was discussing with wife. We’re both physicians and this is what we think as well . One moment talking to teammates and the next, on the ground. Aortic rupture/dissection is likely - something caused blood from reaching the brain quickly. V fib from a hit to chest wouldn’t have been delayed.

Can someone survive this type of injury?  Can you provide more details of what happens and what can be done to help him survive with this type of injury?

Vitals back to normal - hope that means he is able to breathe by himself again.

Intubated sounds like he is on a ventilator

Isnt a dissection something that is congenital...? I could see a rupture though or if it is a dissection and it ruptured either way not good...

No, a dissection can be via injury. Even innocuous ones.

Nothing but good things to say about Cincy fans.  Everyone was concerned in my section and didn't care about the game, only Hamlins health.

The atmosphere in the stadium was electric.  It was off the chain.  And then it wasn’t.  No one was being a dick.  Classy fans.  No one complaining about the game postponement walking out.  Just stunned.

So Joe Buck just said they were "pounding" on his chest to get his heart started again and Aikman was wondering when this game would be able to be played.

Nice work NFL on Fox.

That is how CPR is done, basically you are trying to break the ribs

Feel bad for Tee Higgins tonight too. Must be weighing heavier on him than most.

Was thinking of that.  He has to be suffering with guilt over something that really wasn't his fault at all.

The Butterfly Effect, I think about it after catastrophic situations. How one single scenario in the day would’ve led to a different outcome. If that stupid college game hadn’t delayed kickoff 15 mins. If Josh and Beasley connected on that pass the same play to Higgins wouldn’t have happened at that exact moment. Man. Prayers to Hamlin, his family, and to the rest of the Bills breathern.

I think about this stuff a lot.  We try to control our worlds but the dominoes fall as they will and we can only hope for the best.

Yes with prompt treatment it is definitely survivable.

The biggest issue from the NFL point of view was "give them five minutes and get playing". It may not have been head office that made that call; it may have been the officials trying to react in the moment. But it was not a good look.

honestly, why does anyone care if it was a good look?

we don’t even know what exactly the refs said to coaches, just that an announcer spit it out on air- but we know it was rectified incredibly quickly.

a ref saying “alright guys take a few minutes and get your teams sorted out before we restart” and then letting the coaches meet with their teams and then regrouping to see where everyone’s at isn’t even a bad look.
