I put this elsewhere.  The brain stem is what controls heartbeat and respiration.   Injury to the brain stem can cause cardiac and respiratory arrest.  Injury to the cerebellum, just above it, can cause loss of balance/inability to stand/walk.

 

I have a friend, a hard going amateur cyclist, who had a cerebellur stroke.  He’s fine now, but it was scary.

This is what I think is most likely.  A heart rhythm problem could be due to a fairly common valvular problem in athletes.  A brain aneurysm that ruptured would also be preexisting but undiagnosed which is usually the case.   brain aneurysms aren't commonly screened for..

Yeah that is standard. 

In fact they may put him in hypothermia protocol as well. Depends how long it took to get a rhythm back. 

Its all about how his brain recovers from the period of hypoxia.
