McDermott has always been known for getting rookies involved slowly and take time to gain his trust. With that said this seems a little different. He was slowly coming along, had two games where he looked good, then disappeared. Almost like he kicked McD’s dog or something.

Yeah, I don’t get it.  Has to be one of two things, or a combination of both.

-he makes mental errors that aren’t obvious to fans.

-McD and Dorsey love and believe in Dirty. He’s put in his time and has flashed the playmaking we’re looking for.  Maybe they believe he can be consistent.

Could it be a secret weapon for the playoffs thing?

I feel like that's crazy but...swear Daboll did it last year.

Okay. Shakir made key plays to get us the win in BAL.

He had a great performance against PIT, including high pointing a contested catch amongst 3 defenders.

He's looked slick with the ball in his hands.

So what is going on here......why is he not being utilized more?

Did he do something to get in the doghouse?  Are his practice habits not up to standard?

Thoughts?

(P.S. last time I made a thread like this about McKenzie, he followed it up with 2 very good games😁, hoping that works here too)

Excepting the Pittsburgh game (where he played 70% of the snaps), Shakir has been on the field an average of 26% of the offensive snaps.

That's typically 16 snaps per game.

I don't think he's in the doghouse.  I don't think he's getting open as much as people think, and yes, it's possible he's making route-running and blocking mistakes.  If he gets open and makes plays, I'm pretty sure his snap count will increase.

Why would you expect a 5th round rookie WR to be utilized more than Shakir has been here? It seems like the team is getting him involved a reasonable amount for where he was drafted and for what he’s shown in his opportunities.

Or it could also be he struggles throughout the week. We look at the games as the only indication as to how much a guy plays. They have meetings and practices all week, it’s very possible he struggles there and that’s why he doesn’t play more

its the coaching preference of McD - minimize mistakes, improved execution, lack of confidence in rookies

Its second time thru the AFC rivals who play pretty good D and of course the playoffs - so John Brown may play over the rookie which I am fine with provided he earns it in practice

James Cook is the most glaring example of having to improve execution during practices and games with blocking, routes and recognizing holes with the zone blocking techniques used.

rookies not used to the longer grind of the NFL season -

Overall Bills have been one of the most experiened teams in the NFL during his time...

currently we are 5th oldest team at 27.02 -

league avg is 26.69

Tampa is oldest at 27.44 - skewed by Brady

Browns youngest at 25.45

AFC East:  Miami 8th oldest, Jets 11th oldest, NE 4th oldest -

notice a trend ?

If Brown makes a few plays over the next few weeks, I think Shakir will soon be a healthy scratch.  McD likes veterans.  Hines, Cook, and Singletary are all threats to catch out of the backfield.  I just have to believe as the weather gets worse, they will run more two TE two RB sets.  Heck they might even dress three TEs and Gilliam down the stretch to keep the running game going. Just don't see Shakir as the fourth maybe now the fifth WR getting many snaps.  Brown had only four less snaps than Shakir did last week.

Or, McD and Dorsey want to bring him along slowly. Which could be consistent with your first point.

I think he’s shown flashes that he can be the guy to replace Cole Beasley, but as far as McKenzie is concerned, it’s apples and oranges at this point. They fit into completely different molds.

Sal C. at Gr-55 has suggested that something like this might be the case on air.  Not that he knows, but it's like there's more to the story than we know.

There really isn't. He is out there a quarter of the time. Josh doesn't throw to him because he isn't open. The eye in the sky don't lie.

On one interception a couple of weeks ago, Allen threw the ball but Shakir made another route.  They need more reps in practice to be on the same page.  It's the problem when you have some players in this position. Beasly, at his best, just stole some first down by going exactly where the hole is.  It's not easy to be at slot receiver. You have to read defense exactly like your QB read it.
