Several media reports at the time suggested he underwent ACDF surgery. He definitely had a herniated disc which is why they did the surgery so soon in the first place. Apparently, it had been a problem in the past as well. 
 

That said, the doctor who did the surgery never came right out and said it was the ACDF, but the 6-9 month recovery is a good indicator.

Yes it was pretty scary.  I drove myself to the hospital and walked myself in.  Wife was with me but I drove.  Not sure what went wrong but something did.  I have learned to deal with my problems but it still isnt easy.  I dont want to derail the thread and I have written my entire story in another thread a long time ago.  Just wanted to add my experience to this thread because it applies.

He is with the team and working out. I saw him in the gym with the team trainer in Chicago. I fully believe he is trying to get ready to play for the playoffs. How many other guys that are out for the year would be doing that right now??

Well if he intends to be back for the playoffs, even more reason I hope we get the first round bye, and he has to play one less game, for his own sake

It is the nerve damage associated with these discs is much more concerning 

So no fusion of vertebrae, like Manning had? I was operating under the assumption he had some type of fusion. If only cartilage I still don’t think he’s cleared. It’s possible, but remains to be seen. I hope if Hamlin or Poyer goes down, Marlowe should be inserted, it’s scary to me to think that injury could influence a medical decision to clear him. We don’t need to go down the Miami Dolphins road.

There's no way he'd come back if there was a risk he could make it worse. Not only would he not risk it, but there's no way the team doctors would let him. There's too much money involved in the sport now. He wants to make it and the Bills don't want to be sued and give it up. All this "I hope he doesn't play because I care about him" stuff is ridiculous. If he thinks he can play and the doctors clear him, more power to the guy. We certainly could use him.

He definitely had the fusion surgery as a scar from the ACDF procedure is clearly visible on Micah’s throat. I noticed it in the video the Bills put out of him playing Operation with Tommy Doyle today. Of course a scar on his throat would also be visible if he had the artificial disc replacement surgery, which entails a three month recovery period but every article I’ve read indicates a 6-9 month recovery time indicating the fusion procedure.

I’m not sure in the difference of injury and I know hockey & football are different, but Eichel came back 3 months after he had his surgery.

It may be that he is a professional being paid a lot of money for this year and is trying to be active taking "mental reps".  The other members of the DB team are working out and he is working out with them as much as doctors' allow.  There also is a chance Bills could release him and he does not want his career to end so this is the best way to stay in shape.    If his health allows he may try to join team in playoffs and the workouts may help doctors agree risk is acceptable.

I misunderstood what you had mentioned thinking you thought he broke his neck.

Eichel had his own team of doctor's disagreeing with the surgical specialists and radiologists working his very own case.
