Sean McDermott is the current longest tenured NFL head coach without a Super Bowl appearance.

Only five NFL HC's  have been with their current NFL teams longer than Sean McDermott.

  1. Andy Ried,
  2. Bill Bellichek,
  3. Pete Carrol,
  4. John Harbaugh
  5. Mike Tomlin

All have Super Bowl wins. And multiple appearances.

Head coaches with shorter tenures and super bowl appearances include

  1. Sean McVay (hired same year as McDermott)
  2. Kyle Shanahan (hired same year as McDermott)
  3. Zac Taylor

As an aside here are coaches with wins against Sean McDermott's AFC East Third Place team in 2022

  1. Mike McDaniel (rookie)
  2. Kevin O'Connell (rookie)
  3. Robert Saleh (second year)

Bills fans are the most patient.  In almost every other NFL fanbase Mr. McDermott would be "on the hot seat"

He's on my hot seat. Does that count?

Patience?  We've been to the playoffs four of the last five years after patiently waiting 17 years.  We'd be nuts to fire McDermott.

Those 5 have been head coaches for much longer than McD. A better question would be when did each of the above get their first SB wins?

McDermott's won three playoff games.  Lewis was 0-7.  Stop trolling.

This has more to do with teams giving up in coaches after to 2-3 years then it does with McDermott not being able to get over the hump.

This could be right. On the other hand a good percentage of the last several super bowls have been coaches new to their teams (McVay, Reid, Shanahan, Taylor).

Did Marvin Lewis ever make it past the wildcard round?

Honestly asking.

I do not think he ever did. Which is why I gave Mcdermott the plus sign designation in Marvin Lewis + . Norv Turner on the Chargers might be a better comp.

I’m not saying he’s perfect or one of the elite coaches in the league, but there’s no denying the tremendous positive impact he’s had on this franchise. If he were to be fired, he would be the unanimous #1 candidate for every team looking for a new HC.

Based on the names presented in the OP, there's also a trend with offensive coaches getting to the big game earlier than defensive coaches (Andy Reid being the one anomaly).

Andy Reid was gaining a reputation as a coach who could never make it and, coincidentally, McDermott is from Reid's coaching tree.

I want to say pretty early in their tenures with the exception of Andy Reid. So that gave them a hall pass on any lack of super bowl success down the road. Reid of course was fired after having a lot of success with Philly because ultimately, he couldn't get them over the hump. But even when he came to Kansas City it took him seven years to both make and win the Super Bowl. So far McDermott's best comps are somewhere between Marvin Lewis and Philly Andy Reid.

I think its funny that people thumbs down or puke on the first post in the thread which expresses no opinions and simply lists out a series of facts.  A lot of people don't like facts.

In his current tenure Andy Reid got his first super bowl appearance quite early. Chiefs fans did not wait long.

You need to go back and google how new Reid was too the Chiefs. You will be surprised. I thought maybe he got them to the Super Bowl in like his 5th year with the Chiefs. But no, it was even longer than that.

Seven years isn't long?
