Dan Darragh Posted November 14, 2022 Share Posted November 14, 2022 (edited) Haven't seen this discussed anywhere else... I thought McD's use of timeouts at the end of the fourth quarter was curious. I understand the theory: Minn was deep in our territory and had a good chance of scoring a touchdown, so using our timeouts ensures that there will be time left on the clock when we get the ball back. But Minn was down to one timeout and was trailing by 4 meaning a FG wouldn't have been enough. If you trust your defense to make a stop (that's a whole other discussion I realize), aren't you better off forcing them to use up the clock trying to score? It also forces them to be one dimensional and throw the ball instead of having their entire playbook available deep in the red zone. Yes. That was the strategy and we ended up with enough time to tie the game even after the botched snap/td. No problem with the use of the timeouts there. They had more than enough time to run teh ball 4 straight plays and he waited until they were first and goal.
