Billy Zabka Posted November 7, 2022 Posted November 7, 2022 (edited) Playing only two Linebackers basically all the time where one is undersized and the other is a giant freakazoid that lacks good instincts, has trouble shedding blocks, and over runs the play constantly giving up the cut back. Big Turk Posted November 7, 2022 Posted November 7, 2022 (edited) I can say on the outside runs, Johnson and to a lesser degree Hamlin have been taking terrible angles allowing for some big gains. Yesterday alone Johnson had two plays where he was in position to make a play to hold it to a 2 yard gain, but instead took a bad angle to try and make a play for a 1 yard loss and got outflanked by the RB when he bounced it outside. Even worse is Johnson doesn't have the speed to make up for taking bad angles, so both runs went for like 20+. He needs to be replaced by Marlowe ASAP if Poyer is going to miss anymore time. Livinginthepast Posted November 7, 2022 Posted November 7, 2022 Great point on WGR this morning. We have serious issues on run defense but they only come out if our offense sputters. If the Offense does what they need to do and gets TDs instead of FGs and terrible INTs then teams dont have the luxury of running and eating up clock. The GB game was bizarre because the Packers ran on us despite the fact they were down by 3 scores. Made no sense. Yesterday the Jets had the luxury after we gifted them the turnover/sacks and drops of taking the ball out of Wilson's hands and putting it on their running backs to win the game. So whats the point here? adjust on offense to help the defense. Obviously take advantage of every opportunity you are given but also run the ball effectively ourselves to give our defense time to rest. Yesterday they were absolutely gassed by the last drive. 1 1 Quote
Brianmoorman4jesus Posted November 7, 2022 Posted November 7, 2022 Knowing how McDermott is, how can he be ok with how this run defense looks? And then you think what can fix it? Obviously back off this nickel on every single down but man you have to start changing something. If the whole appeal to our LBs is the speed we have in coverage, why is it so important that we play 5 DBs on every play? Wouldn’t having LBs that can run and cover give you the chance to NOT play with a NB? And allow you to cover in a base 4-3? Quote

And this team needs to stop playing Nickel on over play regardless of situation. You, sir, should only be allowed to coach pee wee league football. Quote

I’m sorry, it’s not. The guy has been a key component in all of these run defenses. I’d like to see what it looks like with a more physical LB 1 Quote
FilthyBeast Posted November 7, 2022 Posted November 7, 2022 This happens every year around this time and usually this team gets it fixed to a certain degree, but I still maintain that McD and Frazier's scheme is the real issue and what will ultimately cost this team again when it matters in the playoffs. The insistence of staying in a base nickel defense against an offense and QB like Wilson is inexcusable and at halftime they really needed to shift to an aggressive, blitzing defense to take advantage of the situation. We didn't stand a chance stopping the run with Bernard and Edmunds. At least with Milano he's going to make some plays. And guess what? Minnesota will do the same. Quote
