Agree that the line is more important, but every team in the league is fighting over too few quality offensive linemen. Singletary has proven he can be productive with a revolving offensive line. I hope you're right that they'll find a replacement, but I like the consistency Singletary has shown and I think any replacement in FA will cost just as much and carries a lot more unknown.

Just can’t keep ‘em all, unfortunately.  At this point and given his track record I have very little reason to doubt BB.  I trust he’ll fill that niche position well, and that a back whose soul purpose is short yardage won’t cost much.  I haven’t checked the history for FA short yardage specialists, but that’ll be easier to fill than pay a back the caliber of Hines especially to what he’s signed for (about 5-6 per I think I read).  We’ll have 7-8 million when all is said and done invested in the RB position, with players who are at least above average to good at what we need them to excel at.

I like this position a ton.

Let's not kid ourselves. Our OL isn't going to suddenly learn how to run block. If I have a faster, more reliable rb to throw checkdowns to, sign me up. We have to incorporate more RB throws as part of our "run game".

The great thing is Hines isnt just a checkdown guy.  He can actually run routes.

If we actually saw creativity from NFL Coordinators that would be one thing.

A true rotation of Singletary, Hines, Cook, two in the backfield, RBs motioning wide, direct snaps, etc.

But we never see that in real life. The Browns can’t figure out how to put Chubb and Hunt in the backfield at the same time, Walker was a backup in Seattle until Penny got hurt, the Bills didn’t use Spiller for 2 years until Fred got hurt.

NFL Coordinators pick one guy, and everyone else just subs in for breather touches.

I think Cook gets phased out immediately and I have no idea why.

Nothing in Hines game-logs or overall stats screams anything more than average NFL scatback.

Maybe he ran a 4.38, but that was 4.5 years and a bad concussion ago.

would love to see the creativity you describe.  I think GB uses 2 backs sometimes

It was dumping a RB for a better RB first and foremost.  It was having that better RB as an insurance against injury for the playoffs.

It added experience if Devin went down, and everything had to rest on a rookie's shoulders.  That's how I see it and how I think

Beane saw it.

I'll stick with my assumption that Cook is fine and will be the Buffalo Bills RB1 next season.  Fans may disagree with me, but the

only way to know is to wait until next year.

As to Kamera, he didn't go anywhere, and the team even said he wasn't.  McCaffrey was a pipedream that Beane had to make an offer for.

IF by some crazy stretch of the imagination, Christian became a Bill for what Beane was offering, then it would have changed some things.

no you said it’s ludicrous they don’t trust cook yet.

yet everything they have done demonstrates they don’t trust cook yet.

and then of course you saying wait for next year even reinforces that you don’t trust cook yet.

😂 🙄

just hard with the cap.  some team will overpay, and we need OL big time and Gabe extension soon.  Plus a safety perhaps.

Jordan Poyer and Tremaine Edmunds are FA's after this season. Gabe Davis and Ed Oliver will be Free Agents after next season. If there isn't much of a market for Singletary, maybe he comes back.

But with guys who take priority over him, the rise in cap costs to contracts that went out to guys like Josh, Diggs, Von, and Tre, and having Hines and Cook under contract next season - it makes way more sense to save that money and take a flyer on the 3rd back in the 5th round area of the Draft.

If BB pulled that off he really should consider running for public office on the side.  Maybe tire him out a bit to give the rest of the league a chance.

Pat Macfee doesn’t appear happy that his Colts traded Hines to Buffalo, says he will shine in our offense

I liked the idea of swinging big for McCaffery or Kamara. But after those fell thru I don’t really see the point in giving up assets for a guy like Hines. Just give the reps to Cook. They’re the same player except Cook is younger and more explosive. And we have Duke Johnson on the practice squad. Same player. Maybe Hines makes a dent on special teams I don’t know. Would have rather tried to find a backup O lineman.

Hines is a perfect player to go get with the Bills’ integrating more short passing this season.

I’m going to lose it if I see one more “uh 2 yards a carry only DUHHH….” That’s not his game not what he does at all.

Two back sets are a relic of the 70s. Only one back gets the ball, the other one needs to block. Will that be Cook or Hines? And if you want to throw the ball, then you are better off with another WR in the game than a second back. They have more route options and are better at running routes and catching to begin with.

Ok.

So a redundant player to Cook and Duke Johnson it is then.

Happy Moss is gone, not sad about the cost, just not sure how he is different or an upgrade over Cook.

I guess under this response, stick him in the backfield and have him block, or dump it off to him for the same

7-yard gain that Singletary would have given you.

I agree, he looks redundant. Only explanation to me is that they don’t think Singletary is very good in the passing game and they don’t think Cook is ready yet, so they rent Hines for one season to help with the SB run then figure it out from there.

Anyone care to wager what number Hines will wear? Previously 21 (Poyer) with the Colts, 7 in college (Johnson) and 2 in HS (Bass).

Available #s:

1, 5, 9, 11, 12, 16, 19, 20, 22, 23, 29, 31, 32, 34-38 (many more in 40s)

I’ll guess #22

This tells me the Bills do not believe Cook can do what they want from a pass catching RB this year, so they went and got a more proven (and more expensive) veteran to fill that role. They probably hoped they wouldn’t have to make a move like this when the season started.

It doesn’t mean they’ve written him off forever, but we’re trying to win the Super Bowl this year and can’t sit around waiting for him to figure it out.

I have t read through all 35 pages but this move gives Cook time to develop while the team gets a similar skill sets in a proven vet. Also, I’m sure Bean likes his punt return ability. We want a veteran in that position too.

Who knows how the RB room shakes out in the future. A lot will happen between now and then. This is a move for this year.
