First Round Bust Posted September 16, 2022 Posted September 16, 2022 rest in peace..catcher...likely was the best player along with pitcher Craig Swan during a run of some very bad Mets teams in late 70s...as a youngster used to watch Mets on WOR channel 9 (Lindsay Nelson, Ralph Kiner, etc ) on cable along with Yankees on WPIX channel 11 (Phill Rizzuto, Frank White)..after Abbott and Costello move re-runs on Sundays (after church of course)... 4 Quote

As a youngster I used to watch the Mets too on WOR....Stern was likely their best player at the time Quote
Beast Posted September 16, 2022 Posted September 16, 2022 He was a tough baseball player. RIP. 1 Quote
TN Bills Fan Posted September 16, 2022 Posted September 16, 2022 Had the record for most stolen bases by a catcher for a few years. One of my favorite players on some awful Met teams. 1 Quote
BADOLBILZ Posted September 16, 2022 Posted September 16, 2022 He was really good.........there wasn't any chance he was going to play football he was the 2nd overall pick in the MLB draft by a Phillies organization that was making a lot of good decisions and would go on to win a lot of games and go to a couple World Series and win one during his career. Unfortunately he got traded to the Mess and was on basically the worst team in sports for most of his career. 1 Quote
billsbackto81 Posted September 16, 2022 Posted September 16, 2022 This guy was more deserving of the nickname "Nails". Fond childhood memories being the Mets fan I am. RIP... Quote
SinceThe70s Posted September 16, 2022 Posted September 16, 2022 He was at Mets Old Timers Day a few weeks ago and unfortunately it was clear he was in poor health. Very cool that he had one last moment in the sun. Apparently he even got into the batting cage. https://nypost.com/2022/09/16/john-stearns-ex-mets-all-star-catcher-dead-at-71/ https://nypost.com/2022/09/16/mets-teammates-react-to-john-stearns-death-heartbroken/ Quote
stevewin Posted September 17, 2022 Posted September 17, 2022 If you go back to the 1973 draft thread there were many people upset we drafted him. RIP 2 Quote

Same here. And I got the Boston channels too. Creature double feature was great. And The Movie Loft was my introduction to jazz with Take Five theme song I’d flip between yanks, Mets, and red sox Quote
1st&ten Posted September 17, 2022 Posted September 17, 2022 Yep I remember watching him, he was a really good baseball player. RIP John Stearns. Quote
