I just think Matt deserves some Attaboys.  According to his press conference, he had never punted nor practiced punting, until the Bills came to him an hour before the game and asked him to punt.

2 minutes in is when he talks about the punting.  Says the 53 yarder took a "Bitcoin Bounce".  It was nice to see him crack a smile at the end when asked about his "career best" punt.

I still find it weird out of all the athletic freaks that were active they picked the older not overly mobile quarterback to kick. Just a weird fit. On a rough night though his 50 yarder was a nice feel good moment.

Call me ignorant, but why are kickers never punters also? I feel like if a kicker could do both, and do both well, his value woukd be through the roof in the nfl

I was under the impression that it's different mechanics for both, and at the NFL level, they want you to focus on one thing when it comes to kicking. So let's say you're punting and then line up for a game winning field goal. You do something by nature that messes with the process of field goal kicking, and you miss the kick. That's what coaches are trying to avoid.

This has been discussed a dozen times.  It just doesn't work like that.  Also you'd also lose two positions at once if they ever got hurt.

NFLPA rules.  There is limited amount time they are allowed to practice so in this case a player would need to do both practices with additional player needing to be the holder.  And if player was injured the team would need to replace two players until player recovered,

Besides according to some fixed (why is when male is it called fixed? Sounds like broken to me) experts on site you can replace all of the special teams members with UDFAs from high school and save the money for real players.

His big kick was probably the highlight of the night for me, so I definitely didn’t complain. And hey at least we know in an emergency he can actually perform

Good question - someone could start a thread about that.

Oh, wait -

I really doubt Barkley never punted before

Growing up in California he most certainly was on the punt pass and kick circuit

Maybe not in games but he definitely was doing it growing up I would assume

UB lost their punter a few seasons ago  and their QB became the punter also

QBs at least have the most familiarity with taking snaps from shotgun, which makes a QB kicking a little safer than someone else who hasn't kicked as they at least have part of the operation down.

Maybe he’s a more likely cut come Tuesday, so they figured let’s throw him back there in a game that ultimately doesn’t matter…

We have Josh and Bass do we really even need a punter ??

The guy must be a very good naturals athlete to even have any chance at success with it.

That's what really struck me.  Relative to Josh, I think most of us think of Barkley as old, slow, weak-armed.  But really, he's a top athlete with a ton of natural ability.  All these guys are.

He had the physical sequence down pat.

That's actually a very valid point -the QBs have the most practice at following the snap and automatically adjusting and handling it.
