You’re probably right, but there’s also a chance that the Bills already know what Jones can do and since he’d probably retire if he got cut, why risk injury to the 12 year vet.  He’s guaranteed $650k even if he gets cut.  I’m not reading anything into him not playing in preseason other than the Bills are giving younger players every opportunity to take his spot.

People made this argument last year too. They were wrong then. You are wrong now.

See, I haven't been watching film, so good assessment, appreciate that.

BTW, are you doing coaches film on NFL+?  Have they repaired last year's downgrade yet, so that you can actually select plays and toggle between end zone and overhead views, and do slo-mo?

So again, I haven't been watching film but what I've heard on Van Roten vs Mancz is that he's a big step down.  Have you seen anything there?

And apparently Van Roten's experience as a C in NFL games is actually slimmer than Bates so....do we rely on Bates, or look for a backup center in the cutoff bin?

I don't think the Bills agree with you on the Boettger = JAG guy.  They actually signed him as a ERFA AFTER his injury, so if the intent were to waive him injured, why would they do that?  I don't see anything as changing since the Bills made that decision, it's not like he's been out there getting outplayed by Ford.

1. Nah, just caught the rebroadcast on NFLN last night and had enough in the DVR buffer.

2. Looks like Mancz will render things moot, he'll be in the traditional Bates Swiss Army role as his injury is not seen as serious.

3. Anyone knowing (not necessarily executing, but knowing) their assignment was a leg up on Ford in most cases. Boettger, I think he knows his assignments and tries to execute and sometimes succeeds, hence JAG.

I could entirely be wrong, but I didn't think the problem was usually Ford not knowing his assignment.  He just had sloppy technique with his hands and slow feet, so he got beat regularly.

After yesterdays great performance I can the the complexity of putting together the 53 man initial roster, in this thread I am assuming Tre White is not put on pup and Ike Bottinger is

Hodgkins

Kumerow - ST

TE - 3

Knox

Morris

OL - 9

Dawkins

Bates

Morse

Ford

Hart

Specialists - 3

Your thoughts

So I'm gonna take a bit of a different angle - looking at the salary cap

I think this is a pretty good starting place, actually.  Changes (indicated in red above)

1) Blackshear -> PS, Gilliam counted as an RB (FB) per Dorsey interview

2) Morris added as a 3rd TE.  I personally think we might see an OJ Howard trade and keep Morris and Sweeney, but, unsure so I kept Howard and Morris for now

3) Ford traded and replaced by Bobby Hart (sorry guys)

So now, let's look at which guys who are in the top-51 currently would be gone:

Andre Smith (suspension) - $0.363M (6/17 of $1.03M)

Duke Johnson (cut)           -   0.920M

Greg Van Roten (cut)         -   0.895M

Jordan Miller (cut)              -  0.965M

Cam Lewis (cut)                 -0.895M

Matt Barkley (cut)              -0.920M

Current top-51 cap space per Spotrac: $4.156M

Added by the above cuts:                       $4.958M

Now we have to look at the next 8 guys who will now count in the 53 man roster:

Tommy Doyle $0.825M

Tyrel Dodson $0.895M

Dane Jackson $0.825M

Damar Hamlin $0.895M

Khalil Shakir  $0.705

Matt Araiza $0.705

Christian Benford $0.705

Isaiah Hodgins $0.705

Quintin Morris $0.705

(Ike Boettger won't count against the roster, but his salary will still be paid and will count against the cap, so we will have 54 players counting against the cap)

Need to subtract from our cap space: $6.965M

Estimated cap space remaining on the 53 man roster: $2.15M

I give up on understanding whether or not the team needs to include the practice squad this year and how many people can be on it.

I googled.  But, if it's 16 players and we're relatively evenly split between rookies, players with more than 2 years experience, and players who draw the maximum pay, we would need something like $4.17M for the practice squad.

If we were to trade OJ Howard and keep Tommy Sweeney on the roster, that would save $1.98M for Howard and cost $0.965M for Sweeney, so save $1M

Beane has said in the past that he likes to go into the season with ~$3-5M to cover any need to sign injury replacements.  So he's gotta find a couple of million somewhere.

And yet he survived 3years in the league!

Thanks. Really good breakdown. It's a good point about the practice squad and one I had totally forgotten. I think around $4m is just about right. I have been thinking Beane was over-egging it saying he might need to make a move but it is because I forgot about the PS. He repeated again yesterday that he would likely do a restructure, but even in addition the trade OJ Howard option must be intriguing to them. I wonder if they have made some calls? Even if you only got a 7th back as a salary cap dump for a guy who has underwhelmed it makes some sense.

Not only do I need my own thread, it is very important that I refer to myself in the 3rd person.

Still a work in progress. Need to see preseason game #3.

Josh Allen

52 other players

To quote Ron R…”I am very very close to finalizing the rest of my roster”.

I am close to adding Miller, Diggs and Hyde, but not until I pull an all night film study.

Miller has been invisible in both games.

Never mind.  I don’t want to influence your picks or anything.

Oh yeah...IN

Unless McD buys into Schoop’s ramblings, and decides that will be no kicks this season.  No punts, no FG’s & no EP’s.

Boo to my super important roster prediction being merged with someone else's uninformed guesses.
