The two teams are not known until two weeks prior. That effects some amount of fan participation/travel. Having two days of SB tourists, who are probably corporate and/or high spenders has a huge effect on the coffers of the host city. Simple businesses like BBQ providers/beverage providers/charcoal vendors would be impacted across the country. It has become that big of a deal. The best solution is to move it an hour or two earlier, or take the Monday following as some kind of holiday by moving an existing one. Football on a Sunday? I’ll need to speak with Reverend Lovejoy about this. Quote

Second, Trevor Lawrence faced Tua Tagovailoa in the 2019 College Football National Championship game. It was a rout for Clemson, so giving Tua the chance to avenge the ugly loss would be cool, and might even draw in some college fans who don't always watch NFL football. Falcons? A little trickier, but you could have them face the Vikings in a rematch of one of the biggest NFC Championship game upsets in history. The network could show the Randy Moss big plays and missed Anderson field goal coming out of commercial breaks. Admittedly, bad teams aren't going to have matchups quite as juicy as good teams or historic franchises, but never underestimate the NFL's ability to make chicken salad out of chickenshit. Bengals vs Jags. Lawrence can relive his 2020Championship game humiliation at the hands of Smoking Joe... 1 Quote

I agree that it would improve player health and keep long-standing NFL records in tact. The only real negative I see -- and it's a considerable one -- is that, as noted by the person who submitted it, it would deprive fans who go to the games of the ability to see their favorite players sometimes. Imagine shelling out tons of money months in advance for tickets to a big time Bills game, only to find out the week before that Josh Allen and Stefon Diggs would be sitting. Not great. And that is why it will never happen. 2 Quote

Maybe they want one more bite at the Brady-Belichick apple, but the Bucs aren’t scheduled to play the Patriots till 2025. The NFL would have the power to create 16 monster matchups each season, however they see fit. Imagine, in the midst of schedule release mania, looking to see what “special feature” games were on the docket each year. I love the idea but I doubt the NFL ever goes for it. One reason is the NFL always strives for parity which is why you play the same division seed in the opposing conference for that extra game each year (Bills play first place in the NFC West Rams). Also, you'll have lobbying from teams. Every AFC team will claim that the Lions are an intriguing opponent (the Patriots could claim a Matt Patricia revenge game) while every NFC team will make the case that the Jags are a juicy match-up for them (the Bucs could claim a state rivalry). Then you'll have conspiracy theories with fan bases saying they get a harder game each year because the NFL wants them to fail. There's a reason every major sports league agree on set schedule years in advance. 1 1 1 Quote

I know the old school fans will clutch their pearls at such a notion since it had been referred to as Super Bowl Sunday for most of my 50 years alive. But one thing we have learned in watching sports is that baseball has failed in making their most important games available to younger audiences. It makes no sense to me to hold the most important game in the season, and the parties that go along with it, on a school night. Having the game on a Saturday would make it more accessible to kids and the millions of us who have to get up early for work the next day.” People are going to hate me for this...but here's an idea: How about acting like an adult and showing up for work and school the next, ready to be productive? Do you need to make every event an occasion to party? This is life...deal and stop whining. We've become a nation of participation trophies. [It's me!] Make the extra game special and buzzworthy, rather than just a regularly rotating non-conference opponent. The slate of extra games should be hand selected by the league to draw interest and eyeballs, using specific themes and player matchups. Some games could feature area rivalries, with, for example, the Jets versus Giants battle for New York, Chargers versus Rams battle for SoFi. Another theme could be Super Bowl rematches … Patriots-Giants or Cowboys-Raiders. Using this method, the league could create opportunities for great matchups we otherwise don’t get to see often. If they want Josh Allen versus Aaron Rodgers but the Bills aren’t slated to play the Packers until 2025, no problem! Ahhhh, I went back and re-read it. Your name is (pronounced) the same as the Carolina coach?! You must get teased about that a lot. The name threw me off so much I didn't see the "[It's me!]" part. Also, I was also thinking why is this called the "Matthew Rule", sort of like the "Tuck Rule"? Anyway, I also don't like your idea either [sorry...grin!!]. By having a Bufffalo-Green Bay matchup, for example, this would force us to play another good team. Or the Rams would have to play the Chargers, who are also good. I suppose it could work the other way in bad years, but then it wouldn't matter as much whom we play. Quote
Brianmoorman4jesus Posted July 12, 2022 Posted July 12, 2022 I think 2 bye weeks is an easy one. It gives the NFL another week of the season and gives the players more time to rest. That should just be an automatic one Quote

Respectfully, I truly hate the idea of FURTHER scheduling punishments for being good the year prior. The NFL already has plenty of parity-minded policies, and it's important that opponents are chosen impartially and equitably. Draft order (which is huge) plus 7 out of 17 opponents each season are currently weighted inversely against prior success. No reason to tack on yet another inconsistent and subjective counterweight. 1 Quote

It makes sense. The idea of limiting how many games a player can suit up, however, is ludicrous, preposterous, egregious, and stupendous. 1 Quote

machine gun kelly Posted July 12, 2022 Posted July 12, 2022 I like the idea of expanding markets, but some cities mentioned I don’t know if ever would Fly. Some excellent cities where you can go from like to love that makes sense is Mexico City, even Rio, and of course Toronto, and the main Germany cities. Australia is a logistical nightmare like anywhere in China or Japan. Other places may never generate that interest. The other idea I selfishly love as I hate getting up at 4-5 am Monday when the SB is on Sunday night. It keeps me from going to SB parties often as they can be a lot of fun, but they also lead to a midnight getting home as half the party is having fun talking to you’re friends and making it an enjoyable evening. I’s love a Saturday SB party where you can sleep in, make a wonderful breakfast for you’re significant other and if kids still at home with them. No worries about staying out late (Uber of course) and reverse it. I bet a lot more people when they’re a little tired Sunday would stay home and watch all the awards on Sunday night and heck given the other thread could even announce GMOY and COY. How fun would that be? I’m certainly not young. A middle aged guy, but we still love having fun just more judicious about it than our 20 and 30 yr old Bills fans. Granted the old timers would stick to their motto this must be payed on Sunday, but would come around eventually. The other ideas just my opinion are moronic. In what world does a billionaire owner of a franchise be forced to give up his own business which is a cash cow because they don’t win a championship. Obviously this person needs a lesson on free markets, capitalism, and socialism. ######ed. Yes on Saturday! Yes on expansion. As far as the 18 game thing, that’s inevitable whether you like it or not with the new CBA. Nothing will happen until then no matter how much conjecture goes on, and the compromise as I like to play Carnac the Magnificent is two byes, 2 preseason, and probably encouraged inter conference practices maybe one or two to accomplish football wise what the preseason games can do. The difference is they go head to head for three days. I dont even worry about that point as nothing happens until the CBA (I think that’s 2032). Quote

But the biggest downside is the very last sentence that the writer points out. Sammy Watkins' Rib Posted July 12, 2022 Posted July 12, 2022 Sunday night Super Bowls aren’t a problem for those of us living on the West Coast. As another poster pointed out the Super Bowl being a huge weeklong event Saturday night ends up being a huge revenue booster for the hosting cities. Moving the Super Bowl to Sunday would basically take one of those big revenue days away. Quote
