..... Humans.

Oddly enough, Hawking's warning seems to agree:

Quote

Stephen Hawking famously said sending messages from Earth into deep space could get human civilization destroyed: “If aliens ever visit us, I think the outcome would be much as when Christopher Columbus first landed in America, which didn’t turn out very well for the Native Americans.”

He was worried that technologically-advanced aliens would do to us what technologically-advanced humans have done to less developed societies.

Actually, it's more likely that humans on Earth are the only intelligent creatures in our galaxy, and maybe even our neighborhood of galaxies.

If intelligent civilizations were so common that you could get 5 of them in 1 galaxy, we would have been visited by someone by now..

What's the average rate of evolution? What are the chances most civilizations have evolved slower and also have different priorities than we do?

Don't forget the time factor. The universe is at least 13 billion years old. Other civilizations could have evolved and smoked themselves at any point after 4 billion years or so. Look at us. We went from running around the savannah to sending probes to deep space in about 100,000 years, and we are that close to fragging ourselves out of existence.

It definitely is a fun ride.

Neil DeGrase Tyson said much the same. We’ve been sending signals into space for decades, asking would you post on facebook your address and that you welcome every and anyone?

I’d advise against using mathematically based logic like that.  Math from sitcoms is far more acceptable here.

Yeah, also known as  - - Garbage in, garbage out.

 A person I know says he has a B.S., M.S., and Ph.D.. He said:

"BS..: you know what that is.

MS.: more of the same.

Ph.D.: piled high and deeper."

Define "Intelligent".... I doubt that Humans even qualify as such...

A point I have never heard discussed in conversations of this type is whether "visitation" is actually practical/possible given the biological factors involved. Think "War of the Worlds" as an example. The Martians are defeated because they had no "resistance" to earthbound viruses and bacteria. What effect might COVID have if an alien race were to visit earth and become infected. Sending machines/robots/drones to survey and visit other planets seems like a safer approach, followed by some kind of direct radio/whatever contact between two different interplanetary species assuming both parties were actually interested in communicating. Any thoughts?
