  Why would a number change make a coach unhappy?  Unless that coach has that players jersey as a fan, even then he probably gets any jersey he wants free so again no reason a coach would be upset over a number change.

Likely they use the Playoff Caliber until the team actually secures a playoff berth any given year then they have a team ceremony where they swap them out with that years Championship Caliber placards.

It is not the specific player change but changing what numbers are allowed for different types of players.
