gjv001 Posted April 29, 2022 Posted April 29, 2022 I like that we drafted Kaiir Elam. He has the potential to be a perineal all pro DB. But I think Beene was fibbing a little last night. I believe there were at least two players on the Bills board rated higher than Elan, Johnson and Wyatt. I think Elan was the highest rated DB on the Bills Board when they picked. GO BILLS!!!!!!!!!!!! Almost every 4th rounder they've actually drafted in the last decade or so has become a good starter for the team. It's not a throwaway pick and the strength of this draft is considered it's middle rounds. The strength of this draft is the depth that can be found in the middle rounds. Our roster is pretty filled out when you look at it from top to bottom. It's a single 4th Round pick, while we still have like 6 others, they used to move up and take the only guy left they had a 1st Round grade on. It's not worth all of the pissing and moaning going around on this board over it. 3 1 1 Quote

Everything I’ve seen is that he’s crushed his rehab. And the good thing is he knows this scheme like the back of his hand by now so missing TC and preseason reps won’t be much of an issue. Every time someone is at OBD we hear Tre is there, guy is working his ass off to get back I think. Quote

That's literal bullsh*t and just a shout down..............no roster is too good to add a Taron Johnson or Gabe Davis........let alone one where Kumerow, Ques, Doyle, Matakevich etc.. are one twisted ankle away from starting. The proper response is..........it's a risk for a very small move-up..........but if Elam turns into the player they obviously think he will be, it will likely be worth it. No need to oversell it to try to get people to agree so that you can feel better about the trade/pick..........if you were that confident in it you wouldn't be arguing about it. What I would say is that maybe Beane should take a page out of the Les Snead playbook and recognize his strengths and play to them. Snead was a terrible early round drafter..........he started trading THOSE picks.........and suddenly the Rams stopped drafting at the top of each round every year. Beane has been completely ineffective drafting in round 2...........his best use of second round picks has been too trade up for Allen and Edmunds. Meanwhile..........he's had success with big moves in round 1...........and been almost perfect in rounds 3 and 4 (Zach Moss being the only exception). So maybe learn what works and go big or go home with the trade-ups.........or trade BACK from round 2 and get more picks in that round 3/4 sweet spot instead of trading them away. Quote

Yup, its an over the top reaction to a run of the mill trade transaction, those that are trying to make something of it tend to be the idiosyncratic / chronic fault finders amongst the board participants here. They are also big into running amok in game day threads…, 1 Quote

We have a team on the cusp of a Lombardi, widely recognized as the best team in the NFL. Beane and McDermott have built that. You're over here foaming at the mouth over a 4th Round pick. It's ONE 4th Round pick. ONE 4th Round pick. Not a 1st, not a 2nd, not a 3rd, not multiple picks, but ONE 4th Round pick. Continue to throw your temper tantrum, but it's not that serious. Yeah it wasn't almost every 4th rounder.......but it was a really good %..........people forget that Searcy and Bradham got PAID.......Cockrell was only cut because of the scheme change to press man coverage (he would have been a starter in a McDefense over Levi Wallace)..........and Ron Brooks was a talented player in a deep secondary whose career was cut short by injury. It was a tossup whether the 3rd or 4th round pick would be the better one in the Nix/Whaley era. This regime, by contrast, has been really good in rounds 3 and 4. And remarkably ineffective and probably too reach/draft-for-needy in round 2. With 5 drafts in the bag after this one..........if he doesn't NAIL this 2nd rounder this year maybe Beane needs to self-scout and re-evaluate like Les Snead did. Learn your strengths. If you are reaching for need in round 2 then maybe he needs to get himself out of that situation and be more aggressive in round 1 or add more rounds 3 and 4 picks. 1 Quote

I do not expect every 4th round player to become a starter but at least become productive player without unreasonable salary demands. DaNorris Searcy - Excellent starting player in right scheme Chris Hairston - NRFPT (not ready for prime time) player. Was starter about 1/3 (15/41) of games active. Ron Brooks - Not able to stay healthy enough to show worth keeping. Jim Schwartz thought of him well enough to get his signed with Eagles but injured again. Nigel Bradham- Excellent starting player in right scheme. Duke Williams (Safety) - good enough to play special teams but not good enough to be star. Ross Cockrell - Waived by Bills in ploy by Rex and became very productive elsewhere Cockrell was NOT cut because of the scheme change to press man coverage Rex Ryan bungles 'brilliant idea' to let Ross Cockrell go This was discussed at time on board. Cardale Jones - NRFPT QB who may have done better if drafted elsewhere but did not workout elsewhere either. Needed solid QB coach to succeed. Quote

That's almost universal agreement, although we don't know how many guys other teams still had on their boards. I don't think Beane ever gave a number. Quote
