Tell this guy to go play a different sport.

Normally I agree but I don't blame him one bit for wanting a contract now. He was used as an absolute work horse last year for $2m. You see guys like CMC have these types of seasons and their bodies are permanently broke.

The way SF used him the last half of the year certainly looks like that's their plan this whole next season. I'm sure he loves getting the ball, but I'm not letting them run my body into the ground for $4m this year, then cut me loose before my 2nd contract. Pay the man accordingly cause he does not look like he'll see a 3rd contract

Dude is a freaking baller...so good at running with the ball in his hands and YAC and he is built like a beast.

If I was going to be run into the ground like the 49ers were doing with him I would demand a new contract also and would probably be very wary of the toll it would take on my body if they continued to do it...perhaps the 49ers told him they weren't planning on changing his role and he balked at it and told them he wanted out then.

Seems like a pretty dumb hill to die on for Shanahan tho...you just don't magically replace a guy like that, it's not like he wasn't very effective as a WR where he could reluctantly agree to just play him there and make him happy.

Sounds like the two sides just had no compromise and it's just really weird to me.

He is not going to last in this league.

It's gotta be that. Why else would he say don't even offer me an extension. I respect him even more if that's what happened. Dude wants to have a longer career, and doesn't care what the contract offer is.

That's the complete opposite of the "find a new sport" take

I just find it so odd the two sides couldn't find a compromise that worked. It's not like he sucks as a WR and it's not like you just magically find guys like him...even if they draft one in the first round, no guarantee they come close to his production. Dude put up 1400 yards and over 18 YPC

There has to be something we don't know yet because it honestly makes no sense.

Weird that if this is the issue they couldnt work something out. Express your concerns (which i think are valid), ask to keep it under a certain number per game, or limit them to red zone.  Seems dumb to let 1400 receiving yards out the door for 350 rushing yards.

Edit: looking at his stat line he had 8 rushing Tds. Anybody watch him enough to know if most of those carries were coming in RZ?

I agree, but his action, speed, and ability fit exactly what Shanahan loves to do.  The Packers did something similar out of a similar coaching tree with Ty Montgomery and basically turned a former WR into a RB.  It has potentially cost Ty significantly more money being a team player and getting 3 million dollar contracts.  Samuel does not seem to want to risk that.

If SF could replace his usage - it would be fine, but you know when things bog down - you migrate back to what works.

Stop with this already!  lol..  This guy is 3 years in and he has a career total under 250 touches.  He's one of the lowest mileage 4th year WRs or RBs in then league.

And "make him happy"?  Why, it was just a few months ago, at the Pro Bowl, where he was absolutely giddy over his role in the 49ers Offense:

“We’ve got a new position,” Samuel told sideline reporter Lisa Salters on the ESPN broadcast. “It’s called wide back. Wide receiver playing running back.”

Now they are "running him into the ground".    Come on..

It's 2022 players aren't durable like they used to be. Players are stronger, faster, more violent then ever before. Rbs used to have 10 good years WITHOUT splitting carries.

Now backs who are splitting work loads are toast by 26 or 27. Just a sign that these guys bodies are pushed to the absolute max of human capabilities. The heavy single season usage is what kills guys.

Cmc. Gurley. Leveon. David Johnson. Arian Foster. Dalvin Cook and Zeke are coming up quick on being toast.

Dude runs like an absolute animal, and played 2 positions at the same time the last half year. They saw a ton of success running him from midpoint on. Why would they stop doing it?

Pay the man. If he hit open market he'd get 100+million contract... but he should carry an even heavier load next year for $4m??? Pay the man, they know what they're doing to him

A year like you've never seen from a wideout.

He had 365 rushing yards on the year but had 1400 yards receiving.

I don't understand why people put so much focus on the running aspect of his game.  He's a legit elite WR.

He already said he won't accept any contract from the 49ers. He wants to get a huge contract for being a less of a player and only be a WR.

It not just he wants money, he wants lots of money for doing a lesser role in offenses.

This is a really bad take-you could then say this about any wide receiver. You could apply this thinking to any position…josh should get paid less if he hands the ball off more this year, Ed Oliver shouldn’t get a contract because he only rushes the passer, he doesn’t also drop into coverage

the guy is a special talent, deserves to get paid, and wants to be able to focus on one position like virtually every other player in the league

I highly doubt this is where hes at mentally. You don't get to the NFL without a mindset of I want the ball every play. Were talking the top .01% of athletes in the world. Their bodies are strong but their willpower is what seperates them from normal human beings.... Im sure he wishes he could get the ball 30xs a game, but we've seen enough dudes burn out fast, and its just not possible to do this over any length of time.

Id rather be a WR for 10 years, than play both at a high level for 3 or 4 years, and fizzle out. Gurley s career ended at 26!!!! And was no longer elite after TWWENTY FOUR (24!!!!)

I was thinking the same thing, and I think a team should understand that he is a great WR and I wouldn’t want him hurt either if he was on my team. Im also wondering if the QB situation has anything to do with it he knows those numbers might not stay that hi with tray at the helm.

I think the Bills called more designed runs for Josh Allen this year…I hope he doesn’t demand a trade…

Guys get to the NFL all the time and flame out. Gurley was known to have bad knees.

He's not a RB.  He's never had more than 8 carries a game---and that began in WEEK 11.   That isn't running him into the ground in any real way.  6-8 carries a game next year downs't quite put him up there with, say, Zeke's 1650 carries in 6 years or, say, Cook's 1200 touches in only 5 years.

He's a WR who they ask to run a handful of times a game.

Then he doesn't really think he's being "run into the ground"--he just wants more money, which is fine.
