Hebert19 Posted April 20, 2022 Posted April 20, 2022 So listening to Von Miller's presser today he loves to play and will likely want at least 70 percent of snaps. I feel like Ed Oliver plays better the more he plays and Rosseau is a every down type of DE...so do we move a little away from the rotation this year? If I had a vote it would be yes. Ha. More von and Ed and then rotate the others. 2 Quote
SCBills Posted April 20, 2022 Posted April 20, 2022 Von is, of course, going to want that. It would be coaching malpractice to play him that much. Keep him fresh for big moments, big games and the Playoffs. We want 3 elite playoffs with him. The rotation is how that happens… and Von knows that, despite whatever he says. 4 10 2 Quote

I don't want him playing over 50% of the snaps against the teams like the Jets and Pats. Quote

So I know what Von said today but I think that as the season goes on I think Miller is going to be thankful that McD does use a rotation.....which will keep him more fresh especially for when we hit the playoff games. We invested a LOT in DL play......not only do we have Groot and Von Miller......we also brought back Shaq Lawson a very under rated signing not because he is a super start DE but because you are bringing him in a rotation.......same with the DT position. Mat68 Posted April 20, 2022 Posted April 20, 2022 Yes and no. Rotating is important. In the critical moments of the game the best players gotta be on the field. Thats what he is saying. Also, he is being paid 54 mil to do something. Third and long best believe you let him eat. 2 1 Quote
Cruiserplayer Posted April 20, 2022 Posted April 20, 2022 Nolan Ryan was only allowed to pitch every 5th day until crunch time. 1 Quote

Basically I took it as Von loves watching Josh play so much. He wants to escort the opponents offense off the field so he can get back to his front row seat to watch more. He wants to play for years yet and a nice rotation keeps his wear and tear down. Edited April 20, 2022 by AuntieEm Quote
H2o Posted April 20, 2022 Posted April 20, 2022 The DL rotation will continue. Von will be out there when it matters though. Close games in the 4th quarter? You can bet he'll only get a play or two off here or there. The games we're winning comfortably, I expect him on the sidelines for the most part. Quote

Alphadawg7 Posted April 20, 2022 Posted April 20, 2022 Von wont likely see 70% of the snaps until the playoffs I would guess. With 17 games now, I think they rotate him still a lot more than he is used to in the regular season to keep him fresh and healthy. I Just my 2 cents Quote
MrEpsYtown Posted April 20, 2022 Posted April 20, 2022 So I don’t have the wherewithal to find this right now, but the last premier defensive end McDermott had was Greg Hardy. I am curious to know what his rotation looked like. Or perhaps Trent Cole with the Eagles. Did those guys rotate as much? 1 Quote

BillsFanSD Posted April 20, 2022 Posted April 20, 2022 We don't need Von Miller to go 14-3 or whatever and win the division. We would do that without him. Miller is here for one reason: a championship. Frankly I feel like the first 17 games should be all about easing him into the defense so he's fresh and ready to go when it matters. 2 Quote

Maybe Von gets more reps since have questions at DE but expect most other guys to get 33-40% of snaps. Quote
JDubya76 Posted April 20, 2022 Posted April 20, 2022 If Von wants to see the end of that contract like he said he does, he better get used to the rotation. No point in wasting his reps in-season unless we really need to. 1 Quote

Hughes and Addison were showing serious signs of decline and age and needed to be kept fresh. Rousseau was a Rookie and they probably felt they needed to bring him along slowly, at first. And obviously, the DT position opposite Oliver was less than ideal until Phillips came on later in the season. Having Von, Rousseau having more experience, and (imo) a more talented group of guys at the other DT spot - I fully expect that we'll rotate a little less than we have in years passed. 1 Quote

Answering my own question, in his two full seasons in Carolina, Hardy played 76% of the snaps and 86% the following year, which was his best year. Now Hardy was a lot younger than Miller, and bigger. Charles Johnson was consistently in the 70s and lower to the 60s in later years. Can’t find the Trent Cole stats before 2012. Miller played in 76% of the snaps in Denver and 79% in LA. Imo, Miller should be in the 70s here as well. 2 Quote
