At least that's how it happened in Twitter world. Or as a Buffalo News columnist said this morning: "There was never a chance he (Diggs) was being shopped, contrary to whatever Doug Whaley thought. There’s a reason why he’s the former GM." 1 1

And after seeing Chiefs trade Hill, Packers trade Adams, and Cowboys trade Cooper all for cap reasons due to large QB contracts, it wasn't really wrong to think its possible we may have to trade Diggs if he wants money similar to Hill or Adams. Whaley just taking heat here because of the timing and he is a former Bills GM. Truth be told, Whaley was not a bad GM here, his major downfall was being forced to find a QB in an awful draft and then having the Pegulas over rule him to hire the train wreck that was Rex. I mean most of Whaley did wrong was almost out of his control. Cant find a franchise QB when none are available and he never wanted to hire Rex. The one critical thing he did was trade up to get Sammy, but at the time it wasn't that crazy considering he was considered the best WR in the draft and Whaley needed to do something to help EJ if he was going to have a chance to develop. Hindsight shows he should have taken Mack or stayed put and drafted one of the other WR's who had better careers out of that draft. But none of that is known on draft night either. But I am enjoying the funny memes mocking his comment, the internet never fails to capitalize on poorly timed comments haha. 4 1

Ross Murdock
God less Ralph Wilson, There would be no Bills without him. But lets face it, cheapo Ralph would NEVER in a billion years go on a spending free like this. I can't think of a better combo of NFL owners and management than what we have right here in our little NFL snow globe. Pegula's spending like the Yankees or Dodgers!! It's truly amazing. You don't even see the NFL heavyweights like Dallas, the Jersey teams, Chicago, Philly, Wash etc. (Maybe LA Rams are equal). Teams with full luxury boxes, and metro area's of 5M+. These truly are the best of times to be a Buffalo Bills fan.... No they just have to ring home the Lombardi!!

My take is he wasn't forceful enough to tell RB and the Pegulas, no, if you want Rex, then I'm done. Seemed like he was too easy going of a guy. Kind of had an attitude of OK, guess I'll have to figure out how to make this work, instead of saying no! But hard to say I quit when only 32 of these jobs exist.

It is clear to me he has an eye for talent, especially evaluating at the pro level. But being a talent evaluator is not really enough. GM's need to be the face of the franchise, and he failed almost completely at that. There's a reason McDermott was handed charge of the franchise when he arrived. Whaley's lack of a plan and poor performance as a GM behind closed doors mandated it. Funny how the pecking order righted itself when Beane arrived. I know people who met/are friends with Whaley and it sounds like he is a good guy. I have nothing against him. But you are simply judging him by draft picks and draft situations and that does not fully encompass the job. Whaley goes on record predicting we have to trade Diggs while Beane locks him up for 6 years. The disparity is crystal clear. A good GM would respect all the possibilities and not just shoot off his mouth.
