If you want to be a major league town it’s the price you pay.  And no governor was ever going to let the only NFL team that actually plays in the state leave.

There's a spectrum that exists between "NFL team (likely bluffing) leaving" and "the biggest state funding of an NFL stadium in US history"...

And that’s the way it goes.  It’s not as if WNY taxes have paid for tons of downstate projects over the years.

Why did so many on this board went to the “likely bluffing” or they will never move narrative?  You have zero idea how serious the Bills were about relocating.   History has clearly shown that moving a team is pretty easy.

The environment has changed.  Construction costs have risen sharply.  It is unprecedented.   The next team desiring a new stadium will have a different mindset going forward about a new stadium and how to fund it.   Like Josh’s contract, in a couple of years this deal will seem pretty good.

Actually this is not quite true.  The Bills will get the biggest outlay of cash, but The Bills did not get a tax break on the stadium.

On the other hand - Yankee stadium was funded with 670 thousand dollars by the Yankees and about 1.2 billion in Public funding covering land, tax breaks, and actual funding.  In addition, the tax breaks on the stadium and the land continue as part of the deal and it is estimated that between 5 and 10 billion more in taxes will not be paid by the Yankees over the life of the deal.

When Yankee stadium was built there was minor outcry and it cost the Tax Payers significantly more and continues to cost more every year.

The Barclays center in NYC was built and financed through public bonds for over 500 million dollars as tax exempt.  Plus it required another 200 million to connect it to the subway line, use of eminent domain to take property, court battles, design and redesign costs, but somehow it gets built.  It is still draining the taxpayers pocket, but again those funds got pushed through.

Citi Field was 800 million with the state picking up 615 million in funding and tax breaks.

Heck even Madison Square Garden was given a massive tax break starting in 1982 that right now saves them about 42 million annually in land tax.  That means that single tax break has cost more than the Bills will get in this deal, but yet people certain people are complaining about the Bills.

The Cost of the new Jets and Giants stadium is another huge tax shell game.  The land in a prominent area was basically given away and the tax breaks they receive are enormous.  The tax breaks alone will cover the funding the owners spent to build the stadium.

It is stupid and it will pass and it will be just fine and in 5 years when complete- everyone will move on to something else.

Obviously way in advance but approximately how much will season ticket prices go up in 4 years? Mine are right around $900 right now.

Not sure about ticket prices but it's the PSL that's going to get you.

If I had to guess, your seasons will probably be 1.5/2x as much.

Amazing world.

This week…Pegulas and Officials announce new stadium and 30 year lease to keep Buffalo Bills in Western New York.

Tonight…during RJ Banner, the Fans at the Key Bank Center showered down an avalanche of ‘Boos’ when the Pegulas were announced.

Maybe Kim Pegula had a point.  🤷.

It's a different battle in the NYC metro area.  The Giants and Jets crossed the Hudson into another state. Same fan base, just a different part of the metropolitan area, not very far away.  The Yankees threatened NJ too. NYS didn't want to lose another team to NJ. In Buffalo not only would the team move out of state, but they would be abandoning their fans.  Unfortunately the newspapers in the eastern part of NY don't understand the Bills situation and are against the Bills getting a new stadium. Suddenly they act like if the government isn't making a profit it's a bad deal.  I've always  though government was supposed to be nonprofit and serve the people of the entire state, not just the loudest complainers in Albany and NYC.

Not saying it is right but were the boos more about the Sabres than anything?

Probably, they've been a league embarrassment for most of Pegula's ownership

It was a very weak bluff.  Austin?  That town knew nothing about it until the rumor hit.  There's zero chance that 24 owners would vote to put another team in Texas.

This was posted and discussed earlier in this thread:

https://www.investigativepost.org/2022/02/28/state-historically-not-a-big-funder-of-stadiums/

You are conflating state funds with local and federal.

The city/local money for those downstate projects came in the form of tax abatements, infrastructure/land, rent credits, etc.--as you said. The state money is in cash "grants", loans, tax exempt bonds (by far, more money was gotten this way with federal bonds--no state), tax breaks.

As you can see, the overall "state" contribution as a percent of all funding, is low.  The Bills stadium will be almost 50% funded directly by the state.

Since the Bills aren't building a stadium, they should hardly be expected to get "tax breaks" for the building of one.

If you want to compare this project to downstate projects, then the state should have offered the 250 million and Erie County should pick up the 600 million.  Then it's more apples to apples.

Maybe because she has made a mockery of a once proud NHL franchise.

And it's Hochul who announced the state was going to build Kim Terry a new stadium ...

A point about what?  Did I miss a statement?
