Captain Hindsight Posted March 19, 2022 Posted March 19, 2022 Whaley could identify talent, he didn’t know how to build a cohesive roster. If he has that figured out he could be a serious candidate 2 Quote
Mr. WEO Posted March 19, 2022 Posted March 19, 2022 Ahh...the wistful Doug Whaley nostalgia.. He was a bum. Ran from responsibility. McBeane gutted his life's work on the Bills, rebuilt them and presto....SB contenders... 4 1 Quote
Miyagi-Do Karate Posted March 19, 2022 Posted March 19, 2022 My buddy is a Steelers fan and is high on him. I guess Whaley has a talk radio show in Pittsburgh and it is really popular. 2 Quote

Malazan Posted March 19, 2022 Posted March 19, 2022 (edited) Whaley did a great job. Without him, we wouldn't have a GM the quality of Beane. I'd be asking him how he managed it too. 1 minute ago, Miyagi-Do Karate said: My buddy is a Steelers fan and is high on him. Aussie Joe Posted March 19, 2022 Posted March 19, 2022 Does anyone remember the Charles Clay contract that Whaley came up with ? Made Star’s deal look like a steal.. 1 Quote

But on behalf of the Steelers fan neighbor I try to torture by teaching her parrots to sing the Shout! song, The Shout! song is a prank, Whaley as the GM of her fan team would be just Too Cruel 1 1 Quote

Freddie's Dead Posted March 19, 2022 Posted March 19, 2022 Doug Whaley is a Pro Personnel guy only. Anything more wide-ranging is beyond his skillset, as he proved in Buffalo. Dude was a witch at procuring good-quality low-cost free agents, but a disaster in the draft. 1 Quote

Success Posted March 19, 2022 Posted March 19, 2022 I was a big Whaley believer. But ultimately, you really can't do anything w/out a true franchise QB. I'm really grateful for this time right now. Allen makes everything possible. We had to wait a long time between Kelly & Allen, so I'm going to appreciate every second while JA is a Bill. Quote

DCofNC Posted March 19, 2022 Posted March 19, 2022 His roster was the one McD got to the playoffs with, let’s not act like he didn’t put together a good roster. He missed on a WB which is debated if he had a call on. His track record was not nearly what people make it out to be. I think he had a better D built than we have now if we are being honest. 2 Quote

Didn't care for his personality at times, wither. Still seems like a good fit for Pittsburgh. That Hughes trade was righteous. It’s not that he wasn’t methodical…he just had no idea how to build a team. Some of his picks were ok, but his strength was mostly pro personnel. I don’t think you want Whaley as GM 1 Quote

McDermott was in a suit, Whaley was in sweats. You've never seen Brandon Beane in sweats? Of all the things you could single out Whaley for, that's what you pick? Generally speaking, he was an extremely sharp dresser during his time here. Quote
