I believe that they have the power to void a trade, not sure about a contract though. At the very least they should publicly send a strongly worded letter to the team and player.  Roger's silence tells you all you need to know.

What's the over under on how long the suspension will be? 5.5 games?

The NFL has to approve every trade made and every contract teams sign players to.  They can disapprove the trade or contract.  They could also conditionally approve the contract with changes.  Then the only recourse would be a lawsuit.

Why would they draw the line at a team structuring a contract so that a player facing a potential suspension ends up with more cash in his pocket if he does get suspended?

That's probably exactly what they should do it's like they went ahead and made their own verdict in the pending Civil Case of sexual assault.

The optics of it all is disgusting

I can give you 22 good reasons.

You're unsure whether he'll be suspended?

I would love to know how long those in depth conversations went on.

Tell us, Jimmy, why did you construct a contract in such a way as to cause as little financial pain to Watson as was possible?

The kicker is that he then puts his wife's name on the statement. Like WTF, that gives it more credence? Someone, please search and tell us how many times Dee Haslam has been quoted by the browns organization.

That was nice of them to have a detailed straightforward conversation with Deshaun. I wonder if there was anyone else they had a detailed straightforward conversation with? I can think of 22 people they might have wanted to talk to.

His best statistical year came with a 4 win season. * I also don’t like him for off the field reasons. Best case scenario he is a creep. Worst (and most likely) case is he is a sexual predator.

Overheard:

"That's Some ***** when the morally upright starting QB on the Browns roster is the married guy who met a random chick for a #### ### in a parking lot."

Could not agree more. The fact that The Shield hasn't stepped in and made them rework the contract tells you everything you need to know. That contract should be ripped up and reworked to not give Watson such a huge advantage this year.

It could tell us that the NFL will hold back from any disciplinary action until 2023

Welp, looks like we have some competition

Watson with Chubb and Hunt is a problem.

They might not even make the playoffs again.

Some real strong statements here without any cameras around

be very curious how the first press conference goes. You can’t not have one. You are paying this guy 46 million each year and is now the face of the franchise. I bet Haslam doesn’t show

Literally just like every other NFL team in March.  Honestly,  if Allen had a serious injury like Mayfield did last year, do the Bills make the playoffs?

(Not saying Mayfield is as good as Allen)

Agreed. That said, I don’t understand how people can compare Watson to roethlisberger at least based on what we know. Ben’s situation was like Kobe’s basically.

Watson’s situation has some additional red flags of being a serial predator type of situation. It should be really alarming for any team to invest in Watson. Just a huge risk.

Right.

I'll preface this by saying I believe accused people deserve their day in court, and we just have the lawsuits so far.  There may be evidence on both sides, exculpatory and incriminating.

BUT suspending that temporarily and taking the accounts in the suits plus the additional (not part of the lawsuit) Vrentas SI article at face value....

...we have a young, handsome, wealthy famous athlete who could pretty much walk into a bar and choose any "cruising" or unattached woman to take home for a casual encounter

...he could hire any number of professional escort or sex worker of any appearance and attributes to provide any consensual services he wanted

...most pro athletes get massages from a small number of skilled therapists they work with regularly, and treat those therapists with respect to remain clients - because that assures the best chance they will get the therapeutic results they need to keep their "business" in peak condition, from someone who knows them.

At very best, Watson was clearly seeking out large numbers of massage therapists, some of whom seem to have been less experienced or trained in working with athletes, and behaved in such a way that 22 of them joined a lawsuit (with all the disruption and negative social media attention that brings down on them).  And it begs the question "why"?

The simple, Occam's Razor explanation seems to me, that what Watson was looking for, wasn't something he could in fact obtain from a consensual encounter.
