I fully understand your point. Let me try to unbottle your mind. I  overreacted to the signing. I just saw headlines of 6 years 20 mil without knowing the details. My mistake. Several here have pointed justly made that point. Some nice and professional others not so much.

As I've stated I don't hate the signing. My eyeball test as stated before doesn't see Miller as elite but 2021 statistics show that he is. So it's probably safer to say my eyes aren't seeing things accurately. However, stats can be deceiving.

It remains to be seen how good he will be as a Bill.

Hope that helps

obviously, since the season hasn't started. Don't worry about stats.

Look at how good he is

So of course, the details of the contract aren't out except this:

It might be worth pointing out that Von Miller's last contract with the Broncos was 6 years, $117M with a signing bonus of $17M and $42M guaranteed at signing, $70M guaranteed overall.  He played out 5.5 years of it before being traded.

Obviously there's a lot of "Devil in the Details" of how this is structured.  Practically speaking, the reason teams shy away from huge signing bonuses is because that's guaranteed money whether the player kicks ass or "goes on vacation", but when the money is guaranteed either way, there's a lot of freedom in how the money gets moved around between salary and bonus.

I like the signing but I also wish we had just traded for him.  Maybe the Bills and Rams would swap roles right now, with the Rams trying to go all-in again and signing MIller to a massive contract while the Bills celebrate a Lombardi.

I am happy we still have our picks. Watching the Bills play last season, I never got the sense that it was our year. Now, it is starting to feel like this team is being set up to take that next step.

The great defensive ends have all managed to play well into their 30's. Bruce until he was 40, Reggie White until he was 37. More recent guys like Peppers til he was 37 and that's off the top of my head. No reason to think he can't be very effective for a few years of this deal.  He's been very healthy with only a handful of missed games in recent years.

Who wears #40 on the Bills?  🦗

Investigation over, complete

That may be part of the reason. I got the full answer from his wiki page:

Quote

He wore No. 58 in honor of Pro Football Hall of Fame linebacker Derrick Thomas.

Miller chose to wear number 40 for the Rams, his number at Texas A&M, with the familial blessing of Rams legend Elroy Hirsch since his number 58 was taken by Justin Hollins.

I think we, and Von, likely know this is a 3 year deal....but no reason to not think he won't play at a high level for these 3 years.   Especially with McDermott's philosophy of using a heavy DL rotation.

If I'm Buffalo, I use him as sparingly as possible against meh teams, and then unleash him in big games and the playoffs.

I hate to be Eeyore - that's not usually the role I play - but I don't like this signing.

Look at the production of pass rushers post 33yo.  Von Miller is still a great player but the decline is inevitable.

And then there's the opportunity cost.  What players will we pass up because  so much money is tied up in Von?   That's my worry.

But, as others have pointed out, the devil is in the (contract) details.  If VM averages 10 sacks for the next few years and the real deal is 4 years at 17mill/year....  maybe Von is almost worth his price.

I think effective older players is going to be a trend with advances made in such things as nutrition and sports medicine.

Can't predict it but yeah there's going to be dead cap with this deal most likely in 2024 or 2025. There's ways to offset that dead cap. The easiest way will be converting Josh Allen base salary into bonus. It'll create all the cap room needed to cover any potential dead cap from Von Miller.

The Bills are in great shape cap wise as of now. We don't know what happens in the future.

Greg Tompsett from cover 1 said on their most recent podcast that he thinks Millers cap hit this year will be around 7 million, next year around 10 million then year three it will go up quite a bit.

That’s not counting contracts for Miller, Jones, Saffold, Howard.

Von Miller and Chandler Jones were the only two elite pass rushers on the FA market.  Both are the same age.  Both got, basically, guaranteed 3 year contracts.

The next level were guys like Zadarius Smith, Uchenna Nwosu etc.. a step down for Miller & Jones.

Then there's the trade market.   We saw what 31 yr old Khalil Mack went for.  Danielle Hunter is reportedly being shopped, but I have to believe the asking price starts at a 1st RD pick minimum... only 27, but with a rough injury history the past two years.

He is the same age as Chandler Jones and Mack and they are still productive.
