I'm curious why that is? Are the callers and readers THAT stupid that radio guys/journalists naturally become condescending and thin-skinned? Is it a macho thing?

All of the above.

Yes, they are in a small position of marginal celebrity, and then also are in a business where espousing (and arguing) their opinions is like 90% of the job. And it is their show, so you better not try to show them up. So the ego gets pumped.

But at that same time, they are definitely dealing with idiots all day. Have you heard WGR callers? It's a meme now for a reason. And that's just in Buffalo.

Colin Cowherd, for his many faults, has a great take on "sports radio callers". He calls them "The Wrong Guy". Meaning, this is a guy who has made so many wrong decisions in his life, he has nothing better to do than wait on hold all day just to express some halfassed opinion on a sports radio talk show. And that opinion is probably wrong too. LOL.

Sal has grown waaaaay too full of himself. He's a master of the obvious.  He did my nephews game last fall. His pxp is almost as bad as Kevin Sylvester.

You shouldn’t be so hard on your nephew.
