If you're too young to remember, ABC did not broadcast this game live.  They thought the US was going to be blasted by the Soviets, as was the case just a couple of weeks earlier at MSG. It was shown on tape-delay at 8:00pm EST that night.  Americans near the Canadian border, Buffalo included, got to see the game live on CBC.  It was also Al Michaels' second ever hockey broadcast.

I was actually in a car and heard the score come over the radio.

If I recall, it was a Friday night.  I was at a Liverpool HS basketball game, once the game actually ended there was a USA chant through the crowd.  Same for 2 days later for the gold medal game.  I was out and suddenly everyone just started cheering

I clearly recall watching this with my father, live on CBC when it was actually happening.

We were waiting for us to get blasted and were absolutely stunned when we won.

The thing that young people now probably don't get--at all--about this game was that it was way more than 2 hockey teams playing.

It was the USA free market vs. the USSR socialist repressive government, and the hockey players were just pawns in that game.  It was way more than a hockey game.

I REALLY MISS those days of the cold war (ironically enough) when it comes to athletics, as it was a HELL OF A LOT OF FUN HATING THE EVIL USSR and all of their lackeys (DDR, Czechoslovakia, Poland, Romania, and so on).

I guess now we can hate on Russia (or whatever they are called these days due to their many rule violations) or even China if you like, but it's not the same.

I miss those "CCCP" uniforms!

Lake Placid is a great place to visit to relive this memory.  They have a museum at Herb Brooks Arena with the net that Eruzione scored into, as well as pucks and sticks from the game and a lot more Olympic memorabilia from both '32 and '80.  Since the rink is still used today by the locals, we were able to sit on the players benches and also quietly sneak a visit into the locker rooms - both of which were original to 1980.  You can still feel the excitement of that day in the air.

The best party of my college career! That’s almost a decade of parties to get my AD! 😋

Who rented US those big TV’s? I believe it was 6 kegs, and 3 rented TV’s, as big as they came back then.

Notice they shut up at the end. Sometimes silence is best, and let the moment speak for itself.
