But he could have taken the money and proceeded to play poorly, getting himself released after a few years and a fresh start with a new team. Anderson was a Kicker. So Kelley could have just tanked his way off the Bills (for 5 years!) and into a HOF career? Quote

He could have tanked his way off of the BIlls, sure. As for the HOF, what does that have to do with anything? Did he ever say the reason he didn't want to go to Buffalo was because he would never make the HOF there? The point being paying a guy a ton of money doesn't automatically mean he'll love the city/be happy there. Quote
Buffalosouth Posted February 21, 2022 Posted February 21, 2022 (edited) About the Josh tweet. I would love to be drafted by the Bills. Don't even have to pay me in money. Throw me some beers and gear and I'll give it a shot. Undrafted free agent if that doesnt works. Edited February 21, 2022 by Buffalosouth Quote

Playing poorly for 5 years was not a cogent option, doc.... Even if it made a tiny bit of sense, the thought that Kelly wouldn't want to be someday in the HOF is unimaginable, as is getting there with 5 bad seasons to start your career. Everything about this idea is absurd. Quote

I believe Kelly and his agent actually tried to get the Raiders and Steelers to trade with Buffalo for his rights but back then players had no leverage whatsoever to force such a move. And he'd already lost a bunch of money getting stiffed on a good portion of his Houston/NJ USFL contract.........Bills offered him the big $ and they were the only game in town so that was that. If a player really dislikes a place, he'll do what he can to get out of it as soon as he can, like play poorly or be a distraction in the locker room or off-the-field. Money can only make someone tolerate a place they don't truly want to be. Kelly genuinely grew fond of the area and it likely had little to do with how much he was paid. Do you think that, say, Mario Williams loves Buffalo like Kelly did? He was well-paid. 4 hours ago, BADOLBILZ said: In 1986 the NFL had players by the balls. Definitely. I'm talking once he signed his original contract with the Bills and what he could have done if he hadn't grown to love the area, which not only encompasses his playing career but the years after as well. Anyway... aren't many examples of a first round QB tanking his way off a team, let alone a future HOFer. Anderson reference was out of left filed.. Quote

The discussion was Josh's alleged "if I ever get drafted by the Bills..." tweet. I said that even if he had actually posted/meant it, opinions can change, like they did in Kelly's case. And then used Anderson as an example of a guy who got himself released by the Bills because he didn't want to be in Buffalo, and who had a great career elsewhere. Quote

If Kelly didn't care for Buffalo and took off as soon as the season ended, as do many if not most players, he still would have played as hard as he did and had the same success. His love for Buffalo isn't material to his play. He's not some Kicker. Quote
