Josh is the only QB on the roster... who's going to back him up?

I’ve thought about this. Allen and Darnold are best friends and it would be a good move for Darnold to come here and take a step back while backing up his buddy. If we could make the numbers work this would be my hope.

One thing we all have to be aware of…it seems everywhere Fitz has gone as a backup, the starter always seems to get hurt. I LOVE Fitz, but he always seems to find himself starting games no matter where he goes. 
 

Be very careful if you want Fitz as a backup. Haha.

If he was committed to being the backup long term in Buffalo I would go for a 3 year deal too.

Just seeing the topic I figured Fitzmagic would get a lot of run. His is certainly one of the first names that comes to mind.

 

That said, Fitz is unlike any QB in the league. Arguably each year brings him closer to firm backup status but he possibly still views himself as a starter. I think the last time he was firmly a backup was at the beginning of his career backing up Carson Palmer. Since then he's started a lot of games and made a lot of money.

 

On top of that he's a bit of a minor celebrity (especially around WNY) and me thinks that McDermott would be wary of a backup who has a nickname and does things like taking his shirt off at Bills games, chowing down the 72 ounce steak at The Big Texan, etc.

 

I could be very wrong about this but my instinct is that McDermott would prefer someone who doesn't attract attention and keeps a low profile.

Beane's approach last offseason to bring Trubisky in makes me doubt we'll let a 5th round drafted rookie QB be 1 snap away from getting under center, which means one of our FA acquisitions this offseason is going to be a vet FA QB... which costs money.

 

PLUS one of our draft picks is likely going to be a QB because... well... we only have Josh...
