I'm all for beefing up the DL though always. I see a lot of playoff runs based largely on the DL disrupting any good offense.

Anyways, how does a defense not possibly support JA. He beats the Chiefs by a landslide if we get the same pressure Bucs did

It does,  indirectly.  But I meant it in the context of providing Allen with more talent around him offensively to help him be the best QB he can be.

I wish they could add an elite rush end,  but I think it's the 2nd hardest position to find after QB.  It's going to be a huge resource sink and you may not get the results you want. The Bills last couple of drafts are a good example of that,  though I do think the Bills need to give those guys a chance before pushing the panic button.

To me this is the biggest offseason question.  There are talented CB's in the draft.  I am sure we can move money and cap to get needed FA's.  But a DE difference maker is what we need.  A game wrecking dude.  Honestly I would trade 2 #1 picks to get one.  At this point I am tired of watching our D-line not get it done.

Side note Gronk s a FA.  Wouldn't hurt adding him as much of a tool as he is.  Great blocker and red zone threat.

You had me until you brought up the biggest POS on the planet (ask Tre please).  I would never ever consider him....maybe just maybe in his prime and even then he is still a POS.

To be honest, I think a defensive focus is the wrong approach. They arguably have the best player in the league at QB.  If it were me,  I'd put the majority of my resources into supporting him with more speed and playmakers at the skill positions and improved line play,  and aim to have a top 10-15 defense rather than trying to be #1.

Then you will lose every time you play Mahomes, Stafford, Burrow, hell even Carr would light up a 10-15 ranked D.

The Bills need a Bruce Smith type player....Bad Things man - Bad Things.

In the game I watched, our guys were pressuring Mahomes a lot, but like Josh he is incredible at getting away.  And those game wreckers the Chiefs had arguably had an even worse day trying to get Allen.  And we got that pressure mostly rushing only 4 and not blitzing.  We beat them in the regular season blitzing zero times too.

I just think people need to stop over reacting when elite players play elite.  We didn't lose that game because we didn't have a game wrecker at DE is my point.

I just cant see what a "game wrecker" really changes the last game the way Mahomes and Allen were playing.  We got a lot of pressure on Mahomes throughout the game as it was, many of which would have been sacks of other QBs not named Mahomes, Allen, or Lamar.

Mahomes and Allen were just on a different level Sunday.  Having Tre White there would have been something that would have had a bigger impact though, like Hill probably doesn't get that long TD if White is in the game.

So I just don't see that being where we need to invest our limited cap space.  Boost the OL, depth at CB, beef on the DL are where I would focus.  Plus we have 2 second round picks and a first round pick at DE to get on the field this year.  Look at how Oliver finally broke out this year, we need to keep grooming and developing the talent we have here who were all showing good things this past year.

I somewhat agree in that people should come away from that game more encouraged about the Bills than not given they showed they are in the elite tier.

But I think the fact our defensive linemen failed to get home and get the sack despite regularly getting close and applying pressure, regardless of how much escapability Mahomes may have, really goes to underscore how much a game breaking elite pass rusher could have helped make a difference in that game.

The Bucs pressure on the Chiefs in last year’s super bowl was as much due to the fact two starters were out, two were playing out of position and two were barely backups. It was an epic train wreck not helped by a failure to adapt on offense.

Well given some of the posts I have read the last 3 days....who was I to know you are being sarcastic?  If you were good on you.  But seriously the tin foil hat folks here the last 3 days has been over the top entertaining......

The Bills just had the #1 defense and got lit up anyway.  For that matter,  the Bills lit up New England's D twice late in the season...2nd in scoring D and 4th in yards.  Top tier offenses these days are going to put up 30+ points more often than not,  even against the better defenses in the league.

Yes,  a Bruce Smith type defender would be fantastic. Those aren't exactly common.  A top tier pass rushing DE is going to cost $20M per year.  The Bills don't have that kind of cap space right now.

I thought our guys got more pressure on Mahomes than they got Allen.  Both guys are just bonkers elusive.

I certainly wouldn’t mind an upgrade on the DL, but I came away thinking we had to hide Levi and Dane way too much.   That issue was far more glaring than the pass rush, IMO.

Tre White and a RD1 Pick like Kaiir Elam would be a massive boost in our ability to slow down KC.   Also, corners typically come game ready… they don’t take 2-3 years to develop.

Again, I respectfully ask what did the game breaking pass rushers the Chiefs do to stop Allen?  They have 3 of them and Allen had their way with them and looked like a video game out there.  They didn't fare any better than our guys did on Mahomes, and our guys were getting pressure on Mahomes all day.

I think at some point, people need to just take their hat off to greatness and realize it didn't matter who we had at DE that game, Mahomes and Allen were playing on whole other levels and thats why they are the two highest paid players in history.

Like I said before though, I am not opposed to a "game wrecker" at DE...but this isn't Madden where you can make that happen easy.  1 - One of them has to be available.  2 - The compensation to get him has to be acceptable by both parties.  3 - The contract has to be absorbable in our cap or reworkable.

So, this really isn't even a realistic expectation IMHO.  What game wrecker is even available?  I can't think of one that fits that description that is for sure available, and if one was, unless they are old, its going to be expensive in terms of draft capital, especially how late we are drafting.  And how could we fit a player of that calibers contract into our cap and still shore up all the other holes we have adequately too?

And then a similar thing happened to the Bucs against the Rams this past weekend as their beat up OL got smoked.

Please point out when an edge rusher "changed a game."

They don't and it's why blowing two first round picks on one would be foolish.

Von Miller won that super bowl and knocked Brady out of playoffs.

I was thinking that too!  Take our biggest strength and make it better.

Its the path of least resistance.  Its a lot easier to build around the elite player that you already have than it is to try to find another elite player to be a difference maker on the other side of the ball.  That's especially true when you have minimal cap space and are drafting towards the end of the round.

Three of the four remaining teams in the playoffs are in the bottom half of the league in terms of yards allowed defensively.

I like that Aaron Donald guy.  He looks like he'd be an improvement.  Is he available?

Hypothetical trade threads are my favorite!  🙄

They are pretty much ALL ridiculous. I know better than to click, but here I am. This is all on me. I freely admit it.

Umm, the Rams?

But do they get a vote? I think we should get outraged that this hasn’t happened already!!! Torches and pitchforks!!! How incompetent! Fire everybody!

OK, I feel a little better. :)

I agree,  but I think the most likely outcome here is that they'll try to bring Hughes back on a one year deal.

Beane actually pretty well said as much during his presser - that he thought Hughes was thinking about retiring, but that if he wanted to play they would like to talk to him about a 1 yr deal.  But it's not enough, IMO.  It would be trying to get a different result by repeatedly doing the same thing.

I think there's something to this argument.  It's a fear of mine that because the final failure was a defensive failure, we're going to continue on the path of investing our highest draft picks and largest share of FA money on D and under-invest on OL and skill players for offense.

Some people would consider we got an elite difference-maker on defense in Tre White.

Great points,

especially the $ part to even begin to support this type of move.  Our D line gets a high amount of pressure, if we were able to get someone a step quicker to the QB, perhaps like ZaDarius Smith (Green Bay way over their cap limit after this year) although he had a back injury this season, our D would be very tough to play against.  It’s like that final crack that breaks the dam open.

Would have to look at an aging (not necessarily old) one from a rebuilding team who knows it. Khalil Mack is really all I can see fitting the bill. I’d love TJ Watt, but I don’t think Pitt thinks they are too far away from competing even without Ben.

Mack would be awesome And from the Buffalo area right
