My concern is what mistake will he do next year?  Two years ago he mismanaged overtime against Houston. Last year against Chiefs he played too conservative and resorting to field goals. His game day mistakes are becoming an alarming routine.

I might be guilty of coming at this with a sub conscious bias because I am not a big fan of heavy blitz defenses. I don't think that is the way to play defense in the modern NFL when QBs are so refined and so much of the offense around the league is predicated off RPO, play action and quick game. But to me blitzing more is not the answer for this defense. The Bills topped the NFL in pressure %. They are getting pressure they need a finisher. Actually the Bills get burned a LOT when they blitz. Some of the biggest plays we have given up in the regular season this season were on blitzes. Whether it is the throw to Claypool in week 1 or the long completion to Kyle Pitts v Atlanta to the walk off touchdown in Tampa. All blitzes. We are a bad blitzing team because the same issue that hurts us when we send 4 also hurts us when we send 5 - we don't have a finisher in the front 7. And if you don't get there when you are sending 5 you don't have the same protection behind to rally and tackle.

As for Tremaine, they have tried at times to make him more of a penetrating force. The fact is he just isn't that good at it. It is when they use him that way that he gets caught up in the mess around the line of scrimmage to often. He doesn't have the same natural football instincts that Micah Parsons has. He makes more impact as a middle of the field coverage guy where he is genuinely effective at taking away passing lanes and forcing the Quarterback to throw the ball to spots where the Bills want it thrown so that they can come up and tackle.

And I think that is the other point where the perceived lack of aggression comes in - the Bills play a lot of off coverage on the outside and once Tre went down that percentage went up even further. I know Beane said some nice things about Dane in his end of season presser (still not had time to watch the entire thing yet) but while that is cute and all, the reality is they played very little press on the outside with Dane and Levi. It was almost all off coverage and that does, schematically, put them in a more passive reactive mode. But that comes down to having to coach to your talent IMO. It is why another corner that you can trust to play some press - even though the Bills will still plenty of off coverage - remains a need. And I'm not talking about a guy who plays man. It doesn't have to be a man guy (although someone like Tre who can do it even if more comfortable in zone would be nice), it just has to be a guy you trust to be able to press and get physical at the line and still recover if they lose that initial skirmish. The problem with Levi and Dane is their limitations rather dictate that once they are beat they are beat.

Wow so much more intelligent than "DC is a coward".

I agree with that. But the calls are still Frazier's. They both have to take their lumps.

Or we need more talent in that front 7?

Look at the 2021 season... best 5 players on defense.... how man of them are front 7 players? Ed Oliver.... maybe Milano (although I didn't think he ended the year as well as he started it). The others - Tre (until injury), Jordan and Micah.

This a 100%   which is why im not on the high pick for an offense player side of the fence.   Bucs destroys KC's o line and got to mahomes...shut him down....  week five we were able to do the same and shut mahomes down.   thats the only way to stop a great Qb.  rather it"s Brady-A rod or Mahomes.

Everything that happened in the last 13 seconds I 100% blame McDermott. He's the head coach in the closing seconds of a critical game. Any error at that point is on him. It's too bad because I really like McDermott. But his decisions in those last 13 seconds cost us a likely Super Bowl berth.

Short, sweet, and to the point. I 100% agree.

This is very well said.  Edmunds plays as a 3rd safety in our defense, when he rushes he cannot get off blocks and is pushed out of the play.

Some of it is recency bias as well, we were a bit more "agressive" with LorAx and I would have to go back and look, but the biggest thing was, he got home with the pressure. Right now our young guys aren't there yet to finish and the vets may have lost enough step that they can't finish anymore. It's that awkward in-between phase with the DL.

I still don't see the young guys taking a big enough step next year where I would try to get a pass rushing edge in FA who can get home to bridge this gap a bit...

LorAx was a unique individual and he had offered to come back and help out if needed and with COVID issues I was hoping they would put him on practice squad "break glass" scenario.

Not looking good for Leslie to get another shot at HC this cycle. Fair or not, those last 13 seconds undid all the good from this season to most decision makers.

Would you hire him after watching those 13 seconds. He was a terrible HC in Minnesota and frankly he's been the same here. He's basically the Tremaine Edmunds of coordinators. He'll do what he's told but nothing else. Now were stuck with him.  I don't think McDermott has the stones to fire him and look somewhere else.

Possibilities left for frazier:

Saints - Dennis Allen is their current Dc and the front runner. They said they will interview others but they aren’t hiring another DC over their own

Vikings - he already was the HC there, can’t see it

Raiders - already hired McDaniels choice of GM, McDaniels likely announced soon

Jaguars - close to hiring Leftwich as long as they fire balke and hire his choice of GM Adrian Wilson

Dolphins - ? He interviewed, it might be the only option now

Texans - close to hiring josh McCown, interviewed frazier last year but not this year

I highly doubt he’s going anywhere.

I think Schoen tried to get Frazier’s name out there with those 2 interviews but it doesn’t seem to have worked.

No, I wouldn’t hire him or any other defensive coach to be my head coach. Regardless of how successful they are. That’s not to say I don’t think defensive coaches can be good head coaches. I do. And for the most part, total body of work, McD has done great here. That said, my personal preference is to lean toward hiring an offensive minded head coach so we aren’t constantly replacing OCs due to success.

Good points.

Their are many here who prop up Levi, but he's a replacement level player.  Boom or big bust as a starter--more a liability than not.

Bills need an upgrade opposite Tre.

He's overrated for sure. When it counted his defense folded like Swiss cheese in 13 seconds. I would like to see a change.

So because Frazier's title is Defensive Coordinator/Assistant Head Coach, we wouldn't get any comp picks if he becomes an Assistant Head Coach for another team as it is not an actual promotion? That blows.
