Taylor takes stand on steroids

By G.E. Branch III, USA TODAY

Lawrence Taylor wreaked havoc on the football field, playing the game with a seeming total disregard for his body. But the recklessness that sometimes spilled over into his personal life never included steroids, which he says has no place in the game.

As NFL Commissioner Paul Tagliabue and others prepare to testify today at a congressional hearing on the use of steroids, Taylor barrels right down the middle of the issue as if locked in on an unsuspecting quarterback in the pocket.

"Even though we don't always show it, players are concerned about the integrity of the game," says Taylor, who was the most dominant defensive player of his era (1981-93) as a New York Giants linebacker. "The doctors, teams and players have to be on the same page ... livelihoods are at stake."

The Hall of Famer, who battled cocaine addiction through the mid-1990s, supports efforts to catch those who deliberately take illegal performance-enhancing substances but also is concerned about those who test positive after unknowingly using products that contain steroids.

Taylor says tracking steroid use in sports is the key, and he is tackling the issue. He is CEO of a subsidiary of EagleForce Associates, a McLean, Va.-based defense contractor that has steered some of its intelligence and analytical applications to the world of sports.

One facet of Taylor's online operation, set to start May 15, will feature a one-stop, Web-enhanced application that tracks the complete path of steroids from manufacturing to usage in every nation, sport and sanctioning body.

"No one could have ever accused me of being on steroids," Taylor says, "because it would have meant that I wouldn't have had an excuse for not working out more."
