My second favorite athlete of all team (MJ #1..)

I hate the Allen pick but have never been so happy to be wrong about something in my life.

Sad that MJ is your favorite athlete of all time.  Such a smug ********.   I’ve had the “privilege” of taking care of MJ on a dozen or so occasions.  Easily the worst celeb I’ve ever encountered and (as a die hard UNC fan) I’m embarrassed to have called him my favorite player for a few minutes in the 80s.  He doesn’t deserve to be anyones favorite based on his attitude. Truly saddening what a scum he is.

His  ex wife, Juanita…..now that’s a class act.

Meh.  I used to manage the cabanas @ the mirage in the early 2000s.  MJ, his wife and kids would stay in the villas @ the mirage.  His wife and kids would often get cabanas with us.  I had met his wife and kids on a handful of occasions and had developed a friendly relationship her and the kids. I mentioned to her that I was a die hard UNC fan.  When MJ finally made his first appearance, she gave me a very warm introduction and mentioned my allegiance to UNC and how much their kids loved me.  The guy didn’t acknowledge me and said where’s the menu?   She shook her head, looked at me and lipped “he’s an #######, dont worry about him”.  Over the years they came out several times and the most he ever said to me was his food order.  Never even a hello. Meanwhile his kids would be jumping into my arms asking me to throw them into the pool.   Every time he would sign the check, he would stiff and his wife stick around to see if he tipped then give me 50%.

I’ve had several encounters with every NBA star you can think of and several mega celebs.  The only ones to make very poor impressions, MJ and LeBron.

Good to know. Not a fan of either, really. Any interaction with Kobe? I liked that fella.

Also, several.  The best.  Not even a close second.

Along with working @ the mirage, I opened Rain and Ghostbar @ The Palms as a VIP Host.  Aftee the lakers won the titles in 2001-2002 they came in and partied at Rain.  The table they had booked for Kobe was a water booth in my section on the main level. Very visible and very accessible for general admission.  His party consisted of himself and one guy, who was his trainer/security.  I asked him if he wanted me to have a nightclub security guard to stand outside his table so he can have some privacy.  He said “we just won the championship, it’s time to celebrate with the laker fans!!  Vegas is a Laker city!!  Just make sure my ash tray isn’t over flowing (he smoked cigars all night) and that my diet coke isn’t empty.”  He didn’t even have a cocktail from my recollection.  There was a line of fans outside his booth for hours and there were no less than 10 strangers At a time in there talking and dancing with him.  Rarely women and when there were, he was a gent.  90% of the peopLe in his area throughout the night we’re dudes.

the following year, they reserved a different table for him.  When he arrived I met him at the door and walked him to his new and more private area.  He said, f this, let’s go to the same spot we were in last year.  Rinse and repeat.

10 years or so later, I was running the cabanas @ the Wynn.  Team USA always stayed there prior to the Olympics as they practiced and scrimmaged in Vegas.  Kobe had a cabana and remembered me (Not by name, sigh).  Same deal though. A few couples came over and asked for a pic and he offered them lunch and drinks on him.

later that weekend, coach K came out and said that he had a meeting scheduled with Kobe in Kobe’s cabana.  Kobe hadn’t checked in yet, but I walked him out and checked on him for an hour or so.  Still no Kobe.  It was 110 degrees and K was sweltering.  I then get a call from villa services, they asked me if I could escort K to Kobe’s villa…..Kobe was getting treatment in the villa and wanted to change the location of their meeting.  the look on K’s face was priceless….and as a UNC fan, it was a moment I’ll cherish forever. Thanks so much for sharing. It's profoundly gratifying when someone whose public persona you admire is matched by private kindness.

For sure.  If it’s not already public knowledge, it should be.  From my experience, Kobe = class.  MJ = No class.  The teacher should’ve taken some notes from the student.

Most interesting.

When I went to Chicago for the draft in 2015 it was my first time ever visiting there. I hung out at a couple of nice places and struck up many conversations about the teams in Chicago, mostly the Bears.

What surprised me were the stories that people told me about Walter Payton. They were saying that only because of his death is the reason why they named an award after him.

They said how disrespectful he would be to people whenever he was at a bar or restaurant, especially to women.

I thought maybe it was just one bad moment from one person, but a few other people had similar things to say.

Thanks for sharing.  That’s disheartening.  I hadn’t heard much about Walter as a person other than what i saw on his docs, which understandably, spun him as a saint.

are you coming to Vegas for the draft?  Not when I’ll be working that weekend yet, but we should grab a beer if you make the trip.

That’s interesting and probably not too surprising unfortunately

I've said it before I will say it again.....I am so happy to be right!  I was on board with that Allen pick the second it was made!!!!

Go Josh and Go BILLS!!

I have thrice dislocated my shoulder patting myself on the back over being right about the Josh Allen pick.  I also predicted the Miracle on Ice and was at the '93 Bills Oilers comeback game not once, but twice.  Predicted the comeback too.  At this point I'm predicting Josh could kick Chuck Norris' ass.

Well Penelope knew Josh Allen was going to be the best QB ever. Even before Josh was born

Yes, I will be there.

Got my hotel and flight booked. I arrive on Wednesday the 27th and leave on Monday the 2nd.

It would be great to get together. I'm looking forward to seeing how that city gets the draft all set up.

Yeah, I’m a little worried about how they’re going to set it up tbh.  Especially if it’s ceasars.  They’re pretty clueless over there.  I was hoping they’d do it downtown.  It’s easier to corral huge crowds down there

Sounds great. @CowgirlsFan will be there too.

If you hear anything about the set-up or any other details with the draft, please let me know.

Yeah, you were a cantankerous dolt back then.
