Oh Canada!

A syndicated article from the NY Times - a site that requires registration - in this morning's Cincy Enquirer had an article by a Mr. Clifford Krauss, titled "Canada's Martin Besieged - Scandals, divisions, now Bono pipes up".

Excerpts:

"The last thing Prime Minister Paul Martin needed was to have a public brouhaha with Bono, the crusading rock star. Martin could always depend on his friendship with Bono, the singer for U2, to bolster his appeal with liberals and youth."

"The (Toronto) Globe and Mail has described the bond as 'less a friendship and more of a strategic partnership that began at an International Monetary Fund meeting in 2000, while Martin was finance minister and working to reduce the debt of poor nations."

"Bono agreed to address the Liberal Party convention that annointed Martin as it's leader in 2003 after Canada drafted legislation to provide drugs to poor countries.

Since then, Bono has repeatedly challenged Martin to raise Canada's foreign aid to the UN's goal of 0.7 percent of gross national income from it's current 0.3 percent, which is well below what several other industrial nations give - the US gives about 0.16 percent."

"To make matters worse, reports in the Canadian news media indicated that legislation intended to provide poor countries with inexpensive drugs has been mired in so many regulatory delays that not a single pill has been exported".

Go, Gordon, go!!!

Uh, isn't .3 like twice as much as .16? If decimals confuse you, look at it as .30 vs. .16.
