you... watched. . the emmys? When there was Football on TV?

Hmm, Living with Girlfriend and only one TV is starting to cloud your judgement, or you no longer have control of the Remote.

I don't know if this was mentioned but when they went through how everyone got casted for the show and in the original script Sawyer was to be a slick conman from BUFFALO!

His script for when he divulged all his background to Kate was...

"I was born in Pittsburgh, father died when I was 2, mother when I was 4. Moved to Buffalo, shithole, lived their with my aunt and uncle. She sat around on her ass all day while he ran scams."

They could have done without the shithole part though!

I think it works much better for the character of Sawyer/James Ford the way they ended up writing him. The murder-suicide as the end result of a scam and that he witnessed it adds so much depth and hypocracy to him. It also allowed us to see that glimpse of when he realized that he was doing the same thing with that family.

And about the sh--hole part.... What, you want him to lie? :)

The thriller-SciFi shows would be a welcome to all the reality and CSI shows out there.

Fair enough. It just means I won't be watching the TeeVee as much. I like that LOST isn't all about Sci-fi, it's about telling the stories of all of these characters and then it challenges the viewer to piece it together, and we do even tho 80% of the puzzle is missing. It is heavy on drama, comedic with Hurley (as a kind of neo-Falstaff) and Charlie, mysterious....

Having seen the Locke-loses-a-kidney episode again... as he's driving in his red VW Beetle (read: Nazi Wheelbarrow :( ) it cut short of what happened. He was just pounding his fist on the roof and panel. Anyone think that Locke tried to kill himself? I was thinking of that ep and how it paralleled Boone being "sacrificed" but the end result for Locke was a black screen, a rimshot and "LOST." Wouldn't surprise me if the linkage was that Christian Shepard did the surgery that rendered Locke a parapalegic. But it also would explain Locke's belief in God/Fate/Whatever, as those facing those circumstances often look to something outside of themselves. Like Sawyer's character, that kind of revelation would give you an instant re-thinking of Locke the person.

So, welcome to the new digs in the OT Forum. The season starts Wednesday.

There was a substantial discussion of this topic back after the original airing. It was always my belief that Locke crashed his car, likely on purpose, and the resulting injuries included his being parallyzed.

And I don't believe that Locke's father, whom he had visited before this assumed car accident, lived in the same area as Jack and his father, so that could squash that theory. Although...remember that Jack saved his wife's life following a car accident? Wouldn't it be interesting if her accident had involved being hit by a red VW Beetle? Someone clear up this location issue for me, please.

Locke lived in California, I know, and it didn't seem like he went too, too far out of his way to see his father. Jack & father were at a hospital in LA. Would be a simple explanation that his injuries were so severe they brought him there.... I would think, tho, that Jack would know and remember a guy who almost killed his wife. Plus, that happened when Locke was a relatively young man -- Sarah would've been like 2, which would make Jack the youngest surgeon ever :). There'd be criminal charges associated with it, too, and I don't see that in Locke.

Too many pages to read, but...

Can't watch a weekly series anymore (no time or patience), I prefer waiting for the DVDs. Well, I just finished watching Season 1 on DVD (first time I saw any of it), great show, great set, highly recommend the bonus disc... now I see what the fuss was all about. I'll read a few posts here the next couple days, then drop out till the Season 2 set comes out. :D

Locke had only been in the chair for four years prior to the beginning of the show. While I agree that Jack did not do his surgery (as you said, Jack would remember), the timeline isn't inconceivable.

Where did you get the four years figure? I watched the whole season through on DVD and I don't remember hearing anything about it. Was it in that same episode?

If so, then the hypothesis is dead. B/c Locke was a young man when he met and was used by his father. They tried to make this obvious with how Locke kept calling him "sir" and other mannerisms.

I still think there's some kind of connection b/w Locke's paralysis and Jack's father (and Jack's) specializing in spinal surgery. It's too close of a linkage to be unrelated.

I'm recently becoming enthralled with Locke's "Don't tell me what I can't do!!" line, b/c I'm running into a lot of people like that myself. People who simultaneously think I'm underqualified and overqualified for an office job and basically asking "Why is someone w/ your education applying here?" (Answer: To have a steady job and to make some money to be able to survive). People who don't think I can do a good job in making some craft look good when I've shown time and again that I can.... I don't know if this is making me a little sympathetic to Locke. But in a certain way, I don't know if Locke is entirely aware that he's being used by the island. I think the island saw his past and decided he may have been the most gullible, even tho he's probably the most capable. I don't think he even learned from the situation with his father, b/c he was falling into the same kind of situations in his job with his boss, and the phone sex(?) girl who he was talking to for 8 months as if he knew and loved her, even tho she was always like, "Ohh, well... *sigh* that's nice John...." the whole time on the phone.

I don't think I will be able to sleep tonight waiting for tomorrow's episode and tomorrow may be the longest work day ever...it is like Christmas Eve!!!

Some more thoughts on Locke:

Anyone notice how he called Hurley "Hugo" when they were setting the dynamite? I don't think anyone else on the island knew that as Hurley never used it b/c he didn't like it, (and he may have associated it with his mental health facility time --- didn't he use it when he talked to Lenny/Leonard?).

And I'm wondering what Jack meant by saying that "If we survive tonight, we're going to have a Locke problem." I think that was due to the survivors' lack of any social order. Seeing the hatch and that it'd been kept a secret, Jack realized that Locke (or anyone) could do anything w/o recourse. Sayid, after he tortured Sawyer put himself into exile before returning after meeting Danielle; not everyone can be counted on to have a conscience to keep them in check. There's no courts or jails on the island to provide a detterent to all of the fights and bleeding/injuries for which Jack is running out of medical supplies. I think it was more of a thinking that something needs to be done to instill order amid the chaos that is the island. Which aligns with how the writers have said there will be more of a direction this season toward setting up a society of sorts.

UConn...some solid thoughts and theories. I sure hope that we get some of those glaring backstory holes filled this season. There is the Locke gap (VW through paralysis), Jacks wife (before he met her and after they got married), Jacks dad (some general holes here), Kate and her dad (we've gotten nothing here), Kate and her mom (harking back to her mom freaking out at the hospital), and I think we need to know more about Boone and Shannon. Any others?

Oh, and had anyone seen this little synopsis from the network website...

Next Episode: SEASON PREMIERE

Wednesday, Sept. 21, 9/8c

"Man of Science, Man of Faith"

In the season premiere, one of the castaways is chosen to descend into the mysterious hatch, and Shannon stumbles upon a shockingly familiar face in the jungle.

Me thinks Boone returns in ghost form, perhaps as a force against what the island is trying to do.

Right. I would add Hurley; and I think his is a big reason why they are there. Boone and Shannon have basically been revealed. I would imagine they have some material that was filmed in the airport/plane with Boone in it, but IS's contract is over, I believe. I think the backstories of Sawyer, Sun & Jin, Sayid and Charlie have been covered pretty fully. It's just the main, main characters that are left. Do you suppose if this goes for a few more seasons they will run out of backstory material? I'm bummed about that, b/c that's a crucial part of what makes the show so interesting.

First off, the back story part, we're all pretty sure that there are going to be survivors on the other side of the island, which means that we're going to have a whole new set of backstories to tie in with what we already now.

Moving on, weak on that spoiler..... Didnt need to be here at all, and you just threw it out there.... oh well. at least it wasnt humongously important.

I'm all for it... I say pin the LOST thread, and start the weekyl thread...ONE thread per week only! Then i say after a week or 2, merge the old lost threads with the big one at the top...

I put it in yellow, which has been the MO for posting spoilers since these threads were started. That's something I saw on ET, which goes to show how much of a 'secret' it was.

And yes, for everyone posting spoilers, please do use yellow. And if you don't want to know about the spoilers, you should know better than to go highlighting something that was obviously intended to be obscured.

See, that just seems like a waste of bandwidth and board space to me. As before, if this is the set-up you like, I'd suggest the TelevisionWithOutPity forum. I'd generally consider this as a place to ask little questions, did you notice this/that and post some light, non-FFS-length theories w/o getting all hardcore. We've been lucky to have this space; why do you want to infringe on this kindness of being invited in someone else's house by spreading your underwear all over the living room and eating the last of the Fla-Vor-Ice on a 100* day?

Because its hot and fla-vor-ice is like $3 for 100 of them :)

I appreciate your concern, and am not looking for hardcore discussions, its just easier to keep track of instead of wading thru 30+ pages to find something that went on a week or 2 ago? Also, does having 2 small threads waste more bandwidth than 1 large one? (assuming same number of total posts)
