Be that as it may, the new stadium will all but eliminate the wind.  Especially the swirling ones.

Who cares the point is Buffalo doesn't need a dome

 

I sit next to a 70 year old man who's a season ticket holder, and he doesn't cry or complain about the elements

 

Most Buffalonians don't care .. we are used to harsh weather

 

For 10 days before our Patriots playoff game, they were countless threads about being fair-weathered fans.. that we can't sell out a playoff game.. we need a dome lol 

 

Then 70,000 showed up in droves.. not to mention our 12 and 1 home playoff record at the Ralph 

 

Eliminate some of the wind? Sure... Eliminate all of the elements? Absolutely not

First of all, no one said it was a need.  Second of all, it's not going to be a dome.  It will have an overhang to cut out/down on the elements from affecting the fans and the wind from affecting the field.  The elements will still fall on the field, although it will be less than what it was before.  And if they keep the grass field plan, it will be easier to clear the snow.

There are tons and tons of threads and posts on this site 

 

Saying how the bills need a dome and it's a mistake if they don't build one... Every bad weather game there's threads about how we need a dome

What sports were "made for" is increasingly irrelevant.........but there is a LOT of revisionist history in your takes.

 

Football is not a winter sport.  

 

It was meant to be played in late summer and fall when school began..........but the NFL was set up to basically play right after MLB was done and wrap up the season in early December before the calendar literally turned to winter.

 

The NFL season runs two months longer now..........and will likely end around Feb 28 not long after a new stadium would be completed.

 

What the sport is about now is money, gambling and high intensity entertainment.

 

That little hole in the roof is the difference between people being dressed to spend versus dressed to not get hypothermia...........and showing up for meaningless late season games...........or not.

 

My issue is that a decision that doesn't include being able to roof the thing is a convenient excuse for the next owner to leave town.

Football was played in December by 1920.. and there's not much of a difference in the weather between January and December in buffalo .. I agree the seasons longer

 

Going back to the Buffalo all Americans in the 1920s football has been played in the elements in this city 

 

It's irrelevant if football is a fall or winter sport.. because we have tons of elements in the fall in Buffalo

 

It could be 36° and freezing rain in November or a foot of snow.. it can also be 66°, that's the magic of buffalo 

 

And we only have so many beautiful days a year.. I want to spend my Sundays at the stadium outside in September when it's gorgeous.. not in a dome

Your anecdotal evidence is folksy and fuzzy........but doesn't really provide a substantial argument in favor of your position.

 

From December 1st until January 30th....when the AFC championship took place this year............the average daily temp drops 14 degrees in Buffalo.........and it's only that little because it becomes increasingly more overcast......which traps heat but creates an even colder *feel* without sun......... and the increased likelihood of snow fall.

 

Obviously.

 

Let's not pretend we suddenly don't know this.

 

January is literally the coldest month on the calendar for Buffalo.

 

Football wasn't intended to be played in January in Buffalo when Rich Stadium was built..........which was 50 years into NFL seasons ending in December.

 

As for enjoying the outdoors........presuming you get 7 hours of sleep.........that leaves you 14 other hours to enjoy the great outdoors on game days.

 

You want to watch the game outdoors..........cool...........you won't likely be the one paying the big bucks that make the deal possible 1/3 of the way into the life of the new venue.......it's going to be a generation of young fans who are used to being entertained in climate controlled environments..........not kids who grew up playing outside 10 hours a day all year round and have great nostalgia for that.

I just have 5 kids from mid-teens to 20's who are all likely to be in the target audience for selling out a stadium with expensive seating in the 2030's............their entertainment and creature comfort calendar is LOADED without even considering the Bills..............so I know for a fact they aren't sitting out in 0 degree weather in 2035 to watch a football game.  

 

Middle-aged and older fans ALWAYS want things to stay as close to the same as possible but

 

 

No roof will no work long term........they are eventually going to need a lid on it if the season extends until March Madness........which is the natural progression.

When they built Rich with well over 80K capacity I'm sure they thought........."in 50 years the next stadium will only need to hold 60k". 

 

I hope you are right by the way..........my dream for the Bills fan base was for it to become it's own entity..........to embrace the "whatever" and just enjoy it together regardless of who owns the team or how sh*tty they play...........basically like the Cubs fans did for 80 years or so.    

 

That's why I embraced the goofy Bills Mafia thing.......I didn't care for the name but the objective is being achieved.

 

That's how I look at the stadium and long term stability in WNY..........not saying I like what's coming.

 

I just know how greed works..........it doesn't dissipate when it keeps coming that easy.........and the NFL is just scratching the surface on the potential of mining money DIRECTLY from fans and the model is going to be more like a Casino than what we currently see.    Do you suppose the new Caesar's Lounge at Highmark this season will be an outdoor venue?
