Warcodered Posted July 10, 2022 Posted July 10, 2022 https://www.nbcnews.com/science/space/first-james-webb-telescope-photo-unveiled-biden-rcna37549 Quote Biden to unveil first photo from James Webb Space Telescope The image, known as “Webb’s First Deep Field,” will be the deepest and highest-resolution view of the universe ever captured. Biden is scheduled to release it on Monday. 1 Quote
Bad Things Posted July 11, 2022 Posted July 11, 2022 (edited) Here we go! Quote The first image from the $10 billion (NZ$16.3b) James Webb Space Telescope is the farthest humanity has ever seen in both time and distance, closer to the dawn of time and the edge of the universe. That image will be followed on Wednesday by the release of four more galactic beauty shots from the telescope’s initial outward gazes. The “deep field” image released at a White House event is filled with lots of stars, with massive galaxies in the foreground and faint and extremely distant galaxies peeking through here and there. Part of the image is light from not too long after the Big Bang, which was 13.8 billion years ago. https://www.nasa.gov/image-feature/goddard/2022/nasa-s-webb-delivers-deepest-infrared-image-of-universe-yet https://webbtelescope.org/news/first-images Edited July 11, 2022 by Bad Things 1 2 Quote

TBBills Posted July 11, 2022 Posted July 11, 2022 (edited) So is this what tomorrow's picture was supposed to be? Anyone have a high res version? Here we go Nasa has 5k images you can download of this which allow you to see the detail in even the smallest (Furthest) of galaxies. https://www.bing.com/ck/a?!&&p=721e45ebb946bb56JmltdHM9MTY1NzU4Mzk5MSZpZ3VpZD0zYTAwYWQ5Ny1iZjk2LTQzZmEtOGM2Zi0wOWE0ZTU1MGEwMzMmaW5zaWQ9NTE3Mg&ptn=3&hsh=3&fclid=8cfa0bd8-0175-11ed-a9e9-78a0f7caddf7&u=a1aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cud2ViYi5uYXNhLmdvdi9jb250ZW50L211bHRpbWVkaWEvaW1hZ2VzLmh0bWw&ntb=1 Edited July 12, 2022 by TBBills Quote

They're only beginning. 1 Quote
ChiGoose Posted July 12, 2022 Posted July 12, 2022 The difference here between Hubble and James Webb is astounding: https://twitter.com/erinbiba/status/1546624746598563840?s=21&t=SSkcrrPeitAR_FB0lukKLA Quote
sherpa Posted July 12, 2022 Posted July 12, 2022 A small point, but maybe illustrative. Webb is an IR telescope. The raw data that it transmits to earth is in pure IR form. It is then "adjusted" to make it make sense to people. That takes time. In no way that that make it less accurate or suggest that the data is doctored. It is simply adjusting colors wo show various IR strength returns. Again, that takes a bit of time. 1 Quote

Logic Posted July 12, 2022 Posted July 12, 2022 Sometimes modern science and technology are so cool that my mind is completely blown. What an incredible image. If you ever need to quickly put the relative insignificance of whatever is vexing you into perspective, just take a look at this image. My goodness. 2 Quote

WhoTom Posted July 13, 2022 Posted July 13, 2022 Quote Webb’s image covers a patch of sky approximately the size of a grain of sand held at arm’s length by someone on the ground – and reveals thousands of galaxies in a tiny sliver of vast universe Quote
Bad Things Posted July 13, 2022 Posted July 13, 2022 (edited) Fun fact. One of the new images from the telescope shows the galaxy group “Stephan’s Quintet”. These are the same galaxies shown at the beginning of "It's a Wonderful Life." Quote Stephan’s Quintet, a visual grouping of five galaxies, is best known for being prominently featured in the holiday classic film, “It’s a Wonderful Life.” Today, NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope reveals Stephan’s Quintet in a new light. https://www.nasa.gov/image-feature/goddard/2022/nasa-s-webb-sheds-light-on-galaxy-evolution-black-holes Edited July 14, 2022 by Bad Things 2 1 1 Quote
