I downplay studies in light of the real world numbers.

You dismiss real world numbers cause you believe so much in the studies.

Which one sound counter intuitive to you?

Again, make your point using real world numbers form any number of sites ....

Let me put it another way..forget there was ever a study by interested parties but out and you were only presented with the following facts:

November 24th of 2020 there were 5500 cases of Covid and 39 deaths in NYS and zero vaccinated.

November 24th of 2021 there were 7200 cases of Covid and 50 deaths with 70% Vaccinated...

your conclusion would be the vaccine works as advertised?

Don’t get the vax, go to the ER, and maybe the morgue.  That’s the way it goes.  But not my problem anymore.  I wish it wasn’t so, but I guess I’ll reluctantly accept the improvement of the gene pool when these hoaxers decide to fight COVID with nothing, or horse dewormer, or Skittles, and become statistics.  Such is life.  And death.

Now my big concern is that these COVID deniers don’t freeload on my good health habits. Enjoy the health insurance surcharges when you don’t get the vax.  I love that business have the liberty to charge those who make things more expensive for everyone else more.  Freedom, baby.

Time to start charging 30% more to everyone who doesn't do what they should.

That’s America, baby.  Freedom.  Liberty.  Like Homer Simpson says, if you don’t like it, then go to Russia.  Maybe there you could not take the Sputnik.  Or maybe you could just be a commie.  Whatever.  I love my freedom.

Sure, when it's aligns with your politics.  I now want everyone who doesn't do what they should to pay 30% more.  I won't hold my breath waiting for Dems to make it happen.

Call your Congressman.  In the meantime, I’m going to enjoy watching insurers exercise their freedom to hit COVID deniers with big, juicy surcharges.  Another Simpsons reference - that’s the kind of thing that makes democracy a friend, not a foe.

As long as they do it for the fatties too. As we know, 78% of Covid hospitalization is in the obese. Let’s now even forget the effect on other costs outside of Covid.   Ya good with that are you you part of the problem there ?

In 2016, chronic diseases driven by the risk factor of obesity and overweight accounted for $480.7 billion in direct health care costs in the U.S., with an additional $1.24 trillion in indirect costs

And those with HIV.  Don't they know you should wear a jimmy-mask?  And those anti-retrovirals are ex-pen-sive!

Authoritarians and socialists don't care about freedom.  And your solution isn't about freedom.  Its about punishing non-conformers.  That what America's left is all about.  Hurting people that refuse to go along with the agenda.

Hoax.  Our laws give insurers the freedom to do exactly what I have proposed.  Enjoy the liberty.  And, if you don’t like it, work to change the law.  In the meantime, you don’t have a right to free insurance, or to private insurance subsidized on my dime.  Not in my America.  I don’t stand for the socialism that you seem to want, and I suspect that all of the non-commies here agree with me.

Maybe insurers will do that.  Maybe they won’t.  It’s a business decision.  Free markets, baby.  Capitalism.  America.  Liberty.  If you don’t like it, and you don’t want to pay the surcharge, get your vax or give up your insurance.  You don’t have a right to private health insurance in this country.  Stop being a commie and get with the program.

Exciting news for those who, like me, love freedom.  It turns out that surcharges of up to 30% of the cost of employer-sponsored health insurance can be charged to those who unjustifiably refuse a COVID-19 vaccine.   I’m sure that we can all agree that this is great news.

And, if you don’t want to get the vax, and want to continue to freeload on my good health habits in the collective pooling of risk, remember that you have the freedom to go without health insurance.  (Which makes sense, anyways, because COVID is just another hoax by those evil rotten Democrats.  Hoax.  It’s not.  But we all know that.). Enjoy our freedom, and the inevitable surcharges that will accompany your exercise of your freedom not to get a COVID-19 vaccine.

Lol. So because you got the vaccine, you have good health habits and should pay lower rates? But me, who is not vaccinated, but runs, eats well, no smoking, no alcohol, should have higher rates? Of all the poor choices people make with their personal health, a vaccine is the one that puts you over the top regarding healthcare and rates?

No vaccine, I’ve never had COVID, but I should pay more. I decide to pick up smoking with a guaranteed negative health impact, I’m good to pay my current rate? Makes sense

Hoax.  I do all the things you mentioned.  Run my *as off, no booze, no cigs, no meat.  And a vax.  Get in line to pay the surcharge, sir.

So if someone gets the vax, ends up with myocarditis (just picking an example), should they pay more because they made a decision that negatively impacted their health?

Dammit!  I knew something wasn’t quite right from your initial post and I couldn’t put my finger on it.  Now I get it - you’re an emotional vegetarian.

Go eat a steak, have a bourbon and chill my man.

The insurance industry is one of the most heavily regulated in the country, so the 'free market' argument and implication they can do whatever they wants is an argument marinated in bogusness.  Surely you know this.   After all, it's not all that long ago that people who didn't want to spend the money on health insurance until such time as they needed it (and then wanted it at retail) were added to the victim class.

Why should this concept apply to just COVID?

Smoke, drink, do drugs, overweight....take care of your own healthcare costs.  Why should I have to pay for others poor choices?

How about if you live in a flood prone or high crime area?  Not my problem, I shouldn't have to subsidize anyone's home-owners insurance.

Live in a poorly run high tax state?  You take care of it.  People shouldn't be allowed to deduct local taxes from your federal tax.  Again, not my problem.

Want a new football stadium?  Bake it into the ticket and broadcast cost so only those that use/watch the games have to pay.  If tickets cost $500 each that's just too bad.

Poor, need services, awww so sad.....get a job.

Isn't this grand now?  Pay as you go is all dandy until it impacts something you care about.

Nope.   They made the right call.  Less risk in doing what they did.  But that’s between them and their insurer.  Freedom, baby.  Capitalism.  Surcharges for the unvaxxed.  Liberty.  Count me in.

Take it up with the carriers.   They may make a business decision to apply a surcharge only to the uniquely stupid, namely, those who don’t get the vax.  Kind of like not having to make a wedding cake for two guys who want to marry.  Freedom.   Liberty.  America, baby.

Hoax.  I never said insurers could do whatever they want.   They have the liberty — the freedom — to impose surcharges on the unvaxxed.  Don’t like it?  Ask for more regulation and less freedom.  Whatever.  I love America.   You should too.

I didn’t say you said that.  I said that the argument is marinated in bogusness.

Insurers do not possess “the liberty—then freedom”—to impose a surcharge on the unvaxxed.   They have the right to consider loss experience,  massive amounts of data, apply actuarial formulae, consider impacts on rate structure and submit requests for rate adjustments to the appropriate governing regulatory agency for consideration.

Perhaps a better way to achieve your goal would be to have the federal government(s) mandate a surcharge equally across the board to those near and far if they choose to remain unvaxxed.  Given that would hit many constituents of the current administration right in the chicken nuggets makes that highly unlikely.

Hoax.  They can jack up the rates on everyone so long as the new rates are affordable, and then offer incentive plans to cut the rates for those who have or who choose to obtain the vaccine.  Simple and effective sleight of hand.  Liberty.  Rule of law.  America.  Freedom, baby.

I can't wait to see it happen to all of those hoaxers who don't get their vax because they don't like the government "telling them what to do."  Then they'll complain because the government isn't telling the insurers to stop raising rates on them.  They'll want more regulation.  And less free market economy and freedom.  Disgusting.   They should move to Communist China if that's how they feel.  We love freedom in this country.  They should love this country, too.

Two points:

First, isn’t the entire concept of insurance to spread the risk and the payments across as many people as possible? Not to charge specific people for specific things…that’s NOT insurance.

Second, shouldn’t a private insurance company be able to charge people if they want to? If customers don’t like that company, shouldn’t they be able to select a different provider?
