My kid did her first 5K today on a cross country course that looked very hilly from my angle. Wasn't a great time, but the fact that she finished is impressive by my standards. Some other things that blew my mind were that the ladies 70+ class had a top finisher @ 35 minutes. And 60-69 was 25 minutes. Much respect to anyone who does any distance running. It seems like torture.

Most conventional programs say around 4 months with a solid foundation is good to prepare for a marathon.  However, I never really stick to a plan.  Sometimes, I have ran for a year leading up to a race, others times I've done them with only a few days notice.  

 

Marathoning is difficult depending on where you are starting from.  However, I firmly believe anyone who wants to commit could do one.  There are plenty of plans out there where you can walk/jog and still complete the race before cutoff times.
