Bright spot? Referee Brad Allen’s crew assigned to officiate Saints-Bills game

2019     8th/14th/2nd (tie)

For someone who preaches process, you would expect penalties, especially false starts, to decrease.

 

 

Up thru this week we have 92 penalties called against us. Dallas has the same. Only Cleveland & Miami has more with 93. Cincinnati has the least with 44 penalties. Find out what that organization is doing right.

The 2 calls I hate most are offensive holding and pass interference bc u can manipulate them as much as u want. PI is the worst when it's real ticky-tacky as it can alter an entire game. I mean it happens way too frequently.

They need to make offensive holding and offensive pass interference as severe a penalty as defensive holding and pass interference.

 

On those defensive penalties, teams are given a first down and it's a spot foul on DPI. They should make those offensive penalties be an instant 4th down and an offensive PI a negative. If the OPI takes place 25 yards downfield it should be a 25 yard penalty.

 

I'm guessing that in this game that these officials average number of flags thrown a game will rise.

It's been four years of finishing near the top of the league in penalties so it must be something the coaching staff is doing or not doing.  Some of it maybe that they are coached to be aggressive but false starts are just players not being well prepared.

 

The surprising thing is that Bills did pretty well penalty wise under Rex Ryan -- they were 32nd in false starts in 2016 with 7 and 31st in 2017 with 9.  McDermott's first year it was tied for 9th with 21 false starts while keeping 3/5th of the line (Glenn, Woods and Incognito) from the previous year.

One of the rare games that finished before the 3 hour mark. Rushing the ball has a lot to do with that, but so does the lack of calls and stoppage of play. I’ll take this crew over a flag happy one any day of the week.

Not a fan of him allowing Josh Allen to take hits to the knees and head, and the late hits on him all night though. I loved that there were very few penalties, but you gotta protect QB's.

I didn't like the call on Oliver for roughing the passer.  He hit him in the shoulder.  They let one on Josh go when Josh was taken out below the knees.  Saying that... Id take this ref crew every week.  Thought they did a good job.

Brad Allen’s crew has averaged the third-fewest penalty flags per game this season (11.56) and the fifth-fewest penalty yards (102.67), with more penalties going against the visiting team (6.67) than the home team (4.89) on average each week. Most of their attention has focused on the offensive line, with 19 holding fouls and 16 false starts flagged this season.

 

 

This turned out to be a pretty good indicator of what to expect for this game. I'll have to start paying more attention to these threads, because I loved how this game was called. It wasn't just that we won, the pacing itself was so much better. And not having to watch drive after drive be extended due to some janky call off screen was wonderful.

 

Oh, any kickoff or punt not being an automatic flag was nice too.
