As surprising as it sounds, I do think losing Watkins has hurt the Chiefs offense more than people realize. Joe Marino has talked a bit about this on the Locked On Bills podcast as well. It's not the main factor (Mahomes' decision making has regressed IMO) and he probably didn't live up to the big contract the Chiefs originally gave him, but Watkins was a more reliable #3 option in the passing game than anyone they have now. Basically, defenses can focus all of their resources on stopping Hill and Kelce because their remaining WRs haven't reached their potential (Hardman) or are simply replacement level players (Robinson, Pringle) in my view.

When KC had Watkins, he could make a defense pay a few times a game because opposing defenses would put their second or third-best cornerback on him and he could beat them in single coverage. The Chiefs don't seem to have anyone that can do that now and draw attention away from Hill and Kelce.

Watkins was #5 in targets and yards for all receivers on the Chiefs last year.  9% of his total yards came on a single "long" reception of 37 yards.

No Defense paid much for Sammy Watkins...

That’s because he was hurt.

When looking on a per-game basis, he was 3rd in targets - behind only Kelce and Hill.

Chiefs we’re 9-0 when Sammy was targeted 3 or more times in a game. They were 5-2 when he wasn’t.

Three days before Super Bowl LV (February 4th, 2021) Britt Reid, the linebacker's coach and son of head coach Andy Reid was involved in a multi car accident that resulted in serious brain injuries for a child, 5-year old Ariel Young in her family's car that was basically obliterated by the force of the crash.  (Currently Ariel is recovering at home but still requires a feeding tube and cannot walk, talk, remember or function near a normal level).

Reid was charged after investigation and his BAC was tested to be .113, above the legal limit of .08.

Reid did not travel to the Super Bowl with the team and the impact of that incident must have strongly permeated the thoughts and mood of the entire team.  The broadcast team tried their best to whitewash the incident by not mentioning anything about it until later in the game when Jim Nance called for best wishes for young Ariel.  But the stench was in the air and the team grossly underperformed then and most every game since.

Sure accidents happen but this one seemed to cast a doom and gloom cloud over this team and in my opinion justifiably so.  Possibly the way things were handled by the team management and league may have made a lasting poor impression.  Football above all no matter what.  I challenge whether the game should have been played.

Such an emotional sport, no wonder the team seems to lack the required motivation to excel this season.

Reid's trial was recently set for April, 2022.

Has nothing to do with it.

Teams have figured out their RPO game and now Mahomes has to make more reads and he has struggled a bit with it, along with the miracle throws not going his way.

I don't think Reid's issues have anything to do with it.

The o-line is bad this year, the running game is affected by this, they are really thin at wr, and the defense is horrible.

Heck Josh would struggle playing on this Chiefs team.

Mahomes would take this Bills team to the SB.

If you think Mahomes is done, just look at the first four games of this season. He was on fire. This team has been affected by the usual things a dynasty/ mini dynasty goes through. Can't afford to keep everyone, players are aging and injuries. In the NFL, winning catches up to you by design.

Josh Allen will take this team to the Superbowl

The Chiefs are putting the game on Mahomes shoulders and he is attempting to be the hero all to often... like Allen does when pressing to hard.

The Chiefs defense isn't that good anymore. They simply don't run the ball enough...AND

My take is last years super bowl showed the world that those Chiefs were getting away with lots of things that weren't being called over the years. Kind of like the Seahawks were doing in their secondary for years. Grabbing, holding, jamming past 5 yards and getting away with it.

The Chiefs got away with it against Buffalo in the AFC Championship game as Tony Romo called it a "sticky" defense. They were holding, mugging the Bills receivers and got away with it.

However, they were flagged 3 for 32 yards against Buffalo. They were flagged 11 times for 120 against TB.in SB LV.

Now, the KC Chiefs are attempting to play by the rules like all the other NFL teams... and it isn't going so well...

Except every person who has watched the tape agrees Mahomes is not playing well over the past couple weeks. It isn't his supporting cast. It is him. Of course it's probably just a slump that he will come out of.

I agree, he's been bad. To me it's mental. He's trying too hard to make up for the shortcomings they have. Doesn't work that way in the NFL. It could be a season long slump. They need to rebuild. They have their centerpiece, and he's only 26.
