Ruggs has a 1 year old daughter. Just an awful situation for him, the victim and their family and now his young family.

Call an uber everyone

There are no winners just an awful situation all around.

Your right, Ruggs is not you or I and in this world money does the talking…the guy you know is an everyday “Joe” and he did 2 1/2…then Ruggs probably gets probation and a fine(that’s what I’m expecting anyway,) and a year from now we will hear Chris Collinsworth giving him verbal BJs on Sunday Night Football telling people how rehabilitated he is and that it’s just a huge success story. It’s just gross and this man should be out of football for life, just as the family of the individual he killed will suffer….for life.

That can also work against him to an extent, nobody is going to hear about Joe Nobody, not true for Ruggs the Judge is going to be aware of that.

If he stayed on scene - how 'bout trying to get the other drive OUT??  Boy o boy, this is gonna get really rough for this kid - no matter how it turns out.  Let alone the friends and family of the driver who died.  Just awful!

He broke his hip I thought it said.

Absolutely tragic.

Im curious about the investigation though. I would have to assume that if he showed signs of impairment at the scene that police would’ve secured his blood at the hospital to determine its drug or alcohol content.

we'll have to see what "showed signs of impairment" means

He went to the hospital for treatment.

The cops probably got a warrant and requested blood.

Years in jail, likely millions in a civil suit and he has to reconcile the fact he erased someone from the planet through his own negligent actions. Please take an uber when you drink guys.

They would have said that and not "showed signs of impairment". They wouldn't hide a blood test which showed he was legally drunk

Correct.  Somehow it takes months to get results back and complete an investigation in MO when the Superbowl winning HC's son is involved, but 6-7 hrs is enough in Nevada.

Driving drunk is an intentional act.

I hope he spends years in prison.

he has more resources to avoid this than the average person.

That poor family….

Results for blood tests aren’t an immediate thing.

Right, but in a hospital the results are pretty fast depending on the test.

The hospital typically wouldn’t be in charge of doing the test. The investigating agency likely has its own forensic lab that will handle it.

It's only 2 to 20 years in sentence range.

Can you imagine he gets 2 years and is out?

That would be crazy

This may sound cruel but I don't like the idea of two young lives being ruined.  Hence the 20 years max prison sentence.  Regardless, Ruggs will have to live with this the rest of his life.

In accidents involving death or serious physical injury, the handling agency could also have an accident investigation unit involved.

There’s usually a lot of moving parts when putting cases like this together and it’s usually not as simple as “Vehicle A was rear ended by Vehicle B”.

If it’s anything like where I work, the accident investigation unit will get Ruggs’ cell phone as well as the vehicles electronics. Those reports can take some time.

I agree, my point is to compare the lengthy investigation and reluctance to discuss charges in KC vs. hearing the very next day that DUI resulting in death charges are expected against Ruggs.  It seems rushed.

It could be the difference between states and cities of course.  Perhaps LV has learned to handle DUI investigations more expeditiously.

If Ruggs is in the hospital due to the broken hip, they absolutely would use the hospital to draw and result the lab test. Of course they would require a warrant before the hospital can take the labs. BTW, I am an RN in the ICU

What % of people calling for a maximum sentence and for him to rot in prison do you think have driven when they shouldn't have at least once in their life? 90%+?

Yes he messed up. Yes he should be punished and spend time in jail. But he's 22yo. It's a sad situation all around.

That's why I think the best post on the whole thread has been the guy pointing out that it's a problem DUI is treated so very differently whether it does or doesn't result in a serious accident with injuries/death
