I take it you've never had a bone bruise.  I had one on my elbow when I played high school baseball (fastball off the elbow) and they wouldn't let me play that week.

I fouled a ball off my shin and got a bone bruise.  I was able to finally start running after about 10 days.  Each step felt like I was getting stung by a 10 wasps….sharpest pain I’ve ever had.  I felt if I ran, my shin would shatter like a glass window.
