JohnNord Posted October 20, 2021 Posted October 20, 2021 Overall, I’m a little disappointed with what we’ve seen from Ed Oliver. Last year, some had theorized that his lack of production was the result of not having a true 1TDT to take on blockers. Well Star is back and is having his best season with the Bills, yet Oliver still hasn’t made much more of an impact. He hasn’t been bad necessarily and can make an occasional splash play. But he also seems to be a non-factor for long stretches of game and has provided little in terms of a pass rush. It seems to me that he doesn’t win his matchup enough. The word on Oliver is that you can take him out of a play completely with a double team. At this point, if I’m Brandon Beane, I definitely wouldn’t pick up his option this off-season, unless Ed takes his game to another level this year. I feel that you can match Oliver’s production with a younger player or a veteran that will sign for a much cheaper deal than what it would take to keep Oliver in town. Would you pick up Oliver’s option after this season? 1 2 3 2 Quote

BuffaloBillies Posted October 20, 2021 Posted October 20, 2021 Was great in college, but played against crap competition in a crap conference. Good lesson for McBean. Don't draft star DTs from crap conferences. 4 Quote

SCBills Posted October 20, 2021 Posted October 20, 2021 (edited) I’d probably let him walk when the time comes. My ideal draft would be Jordan Davis late 1st and the BPA IOL in the 2nd. Starting to lean towards extending Edmunds so Oliver is odd man out on this defense. Edited October 20, 2021 by SCBills 4 Quote

Like Marcell Dareus OK, point taken, they're not all sure things, but I'm just saying, expectations for Oliver may have been overhyped by his play against teams like Rice and Tulsa. Oh, and I could name many Alabama DTs that thrived in the NFL. 1 Quote
gobills404 Posted October 20, 2021 Posted October 20, 2021 He's been great against the run for the most part this year but he's still so incredibly underwhelming as a pass rusher for a 3T with such rare athleticism. 1 Quote
Stank_Nasty Posted October 20, 2021 Posted October 20, 2021 Solid player. Hasn’t lived up to the draft status. Definitely not a bust but I doubt we pick up his option. Quote
97bills Posted October 20, 2021 Posted October 20, 2021 I say no to picking up his opinion, unless he really gets going and I just don’t see it. It’s a shame too we really need help on Dline Quote
Royale with Cheese Posted October 20, 2021 Posted October 20, 2021 I used to defend him but I can’t anymore. He was supposed to be our interior pass game wrecker but has zero sacks and very few pressures. In 48 games, he has 8 sacks. I think he’s a great run DT. I wish he was a terror to the QB. 1 Quote
Nextmanup Posted October 20, 2021 Posted October 20, 2021 No next K for Oliver. Overall, he's been a disappointment. Quote

Loaded question, second contract for his value or for top 5? For top 5, simply no. He is a good player just not a star, as long as he agrees to pay that correlates with that I see no problem. 4 Quote
Dr.Mantis_Toboggan Posted October 20, 2021 Posted October 20, 2021 I'm glad we missed on Oliver instead of Josh. Quote

It depends what that next contract will be. I don’t see anyone paying him over 12M aav. If that. i still need to see more. Quote

For four years he was an excellent DT - probably top 3 in the league. Oliver has 8 career sacks. Dareus had 10 in one season. He was two time ProBowl player and one time 1st team All-Pro. Yes he went to hell after the big contract, but to compare Oliver to Dareus at this point in his career is to not know your history. Oliver is playing at a decent quality starter level. Way under his draft status and well below what he will want to get paid. DT can take some time to develop. If he stays healthy I have no issue picking up his option. I'm fine with getting one more year out of him. No way am I giving him a long term deal. 2 1 1 Quote
Rock-A-Bye Beasley Posted October 20, 2021 Posted October 20, 2021 I said it before his draft and I’ll say it again. It’s not smart to use a top 10 pick on a rotational player. DT is just that in McDermott’s system. 55% of snaps. We have already found decent DTs for nothing since drafting him (Phillips, Zimmer). Should have taken DK and it’s not “hindsight” because I said it before the draft. Quote
