"The quarterback messes up, doesn’t see the blitzer, or the line screws up. I don’t know what happened, the quarterback or the lineman on offense. The defensive player comes in and hits him hard and they throw a flag on the defense."

Quote

[N]ow, every hard hit is a penalty on the defense. So I feel like they penalize defensive players for offensive mistakes."

I mean, this is spot-on and the league has bent over backwards trying to increase scoring by making so many rules against defense and in the name of protecting players, but it’s quite rich coming from a guy who has spent his career kvetching to the refs to throw a flag after every incomplete pass and has benefited from some seriously soft 15-yarders for so much as touching The Brady.

Flutie said he almost retired from throwing a bad pass to thurman i believe that got him hurt.  Warner said the same after the Boldin face breaking incident. He's right

I think I remember that Flutie pass - I think it was in the first series of the opening game against the Colts in '99.  I was 9 years old, but I remember that play pretty vividly.

Your right! Offense is more exciting to the casual fan thus all the handcuffing of the defense.  Hell people were debating if the KC-NO game a  few years back was the greatest of all time and the final score was like 51-45.  Sigh..

Unless when he's playing right lol. Because he has cried for BS flags a lot

Again, isn’t that what every QB should be doing trying to get the advantage for his team?

Yeah the refs definitely err on the side of the offense, especially when it comes to protecting the QBs. Literally of a defender tackles him and lands on him with his body it's a penalty...how can you teach a guy to tackle like that??

There was a player within the last few years who literally tore his ACL trying to make sure his body didn't land on the QB when he walked him...that's not right.

Why don't we  just tell new QBs for the first seven years of their career what the defensive coverages are and where the blitz is coming from.  Then the refs won't have to throw flags because the QBs will know exactly where to throw it?

It is simple, right Tom?

I'm sure he feels different when he's on the field.

I mean you would take the flag also if you were QB and ref helps, but that doesn't take away from what he said is spot on and has hurt the sport.

Love it.  I was just about to post something similar but you encapsulated it perfectly.

100%

I don't disagree at all with what he said but the fact is he's one of the big reasons why the rules have changed how they have.

They literally made a rule because of him going out for the season.

I know he didn't make the rule but the nfl had to protect its cash cow.
