That was the viewpoint of some here - that he was working his butt off to "get paid" and 2020 Lawson wouldn't have been the same guy as 2019 Lawson.

But we don't get to rewind and find out

I tend to agree…why else would Miami have moved on from him after one season after making such a big investment?  It’s not like they received a ton in return.  Also how bad could he have performed in the preseason  to be cut from a roster like Houston’s?

Not sure if it’s injuries or attitude, but I don’t think NYJ is getting the Shaq Lawson who played well for the Bills in 2020.

Interesting to note that the reporter said he “struggled” in the preseason.  My guess is that he’s underperformed since leaving Buffalo.  There has to be a reason why Miami signed him to a big deal and traded him for little return one season later.

Now Houston traded him for less in return after a months.

He underperformed his draft position and then he underperformed the contract he got in FA.

Houston must be actively trying to lose with their decision making.

That franchise is going nowhere until Jack Easterby is removed from a position of power.

I wonder if that 19 season was because he was due a new contract and not so much him finally understanding McD’s defensive scheme. Kind of funny that him and Philips chased the money and have had no success since leaving Buffalo

Chasing the money is important by these level of players. Jordan Phillips in particular deserved to cash in.

Miami does tend to move on from guys that they sign to multi-year deals.

Miami is very interesting because they have done a great job transforming a terrible team into a decent one. That 2019 team was terrible, and they somehow won 3 of their last 5 to be just bad. And then 1 year later they were 10-6.

Shaq Lawson was a serviceable player that a team with a boat load of cap space can afford to overpay. But Miami no longer has the same boat load and off he went.

Dude they are desperate on the line. You could do a lot worse by doing nothing than giving up a 6th rd pick for a former 1st rd pick. Lawson played just as average in Miami last year as he did in his Bills career here. The Jets did fine here considering their circumstances.

I agree with that, but Shaq still does not cover the loss of Carl Lawson.  Carl is a pass rusher by nature and Shaq is not.  Shaq can eat snaps, but he does not fill the role that the Jets need.

It is not a bad move for them - it just is not a move that does anything.  I honestly believe if they had waited for cuts - they could of picked up the same level of player for nothing.

The Jets lost the two guys they signed to start at end for the season - Carl Lawson and Vinny Curry. They have a desperate need at the position. Their other guys are all very inexperienced. They have Zuniga and Huff (albeit Huff a bit of a tweener in Saleh's scheme) who are second year players and a former 49ers backup who has about 4 career starts.

Agree.  Good move for the Jets, because they are desperate.  I would not expect Lawson to provide much more value than the sixth round pick they spent for him.

That was my point earlier. I haven’t been following Shaq in Houston but if he can’t start on that team…

Agree. Players like Shaq once paid play to the level of their surroundings. Being on a winning team during a contract year brought out his best.  I don't expect the Jets to do much of anything as far as winning and team moral. Therefore I expect the same for Shaq's level of play.

Huh? Our last 6th round pick didn’t even make the roster last year

If Shaq had the desire to be good I think he could be an above average DE. He just doesn’t care though, he’s playing only to collect the paycheck. I never thought we were going to re-sign him despite McBeane saying blah blah blah we’d love to have him back, whatever. That was all smoke, he wasn’t a process guy and they saw him putting in effort only because it was a contract year. He’s serviceable, he will set the edge against the run, but he’s not a player you need to double team or game plan against.

I'm surprised that a team like Houston wanted to get rid of Lawson before he even played a regular season game for them.

Wondering if there are personality/locker room issues going on with him since he left Buffalo.
