dollars 2 donuts Posted August 7, 2021 Posted August 7, 2021 (edited) That is the 2021 value of Jim Kelly’s NFL record setting 1986 7.5 million dollar contract when he first came to the Bills. Crazy, huh? We are not even talking about an inflationary change, but rather exponential change in the value of a product over time that just could not have been foreseen. if I could go back in time, and meet up with Jim Kelly before he signed that deal in 1986, I would be like… “Jim, good tidings. I am here from the future to guide you on your contract.” Jim: “Why are you wearing a sparkling coat, weird tie and crazy sunglasses?” Me: “I am trying to channel my inner Rufus from the movie Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure.” Jim: “What movie is that?” keep up because you are a moron if you don’t know by now who is talking in this back and forth: “We really don’t have time for this right now and I should have thought about it further…like maybe a long scarf and oversized fedora and coming out of a police Bobby box. You need to ask for more money. A lot more.” ”How much?” ”whoa, I mean given the 2021 value of the league and tv contracts going into the future, the value of the deal a young man you will meet in the future but who hasn’t even been born yet is going to be worth, in your dollars…a little north of $104,000,000.” ”…middle-aged bald slightly heavy set man, I am going to drink my can of Teem, finish my fondu for lunch and then I am going to kick your ass if you don’t leave here right now.” At which time I will go see my parents from afar, who were still alive at the time and try and find away to warn them about cancer and leukemia…let’s be honest that should probably be my first stop. All that aside..whew, the times they are a changin’, amirite? Edited August 7, 2021 by dollars 2 donuts 3 1 5 5
Another Fan Posted August 7, 2021 Posted August 7, 2021 I mean even from 10 years ago when Fitz signed his extension for 6 years/ $59 million here. Or Super Mario's record deal at the time. it is crazy 1
Beast Posted August 7, 2021 Posted August 7, 2021 (edited) Josh Allen will make more in one game check than Kelly did in a whole season with that 1986 contract. Edited August 7, 2021 by Beast 1 1

My mind was blown just doing the calculations earlier today, Beast. Your practical approach-Star Trek sort of analogy just made bile come out of my eye sockets. That is a crazy comparison. Unreal. Dr.Sack Posted August 7, 2021 Posted August 7, 2021 Are players ever involved in stadium financing? 3 2

Ask for the Public to build the stadium. 3. Sign the franchise QB to show you mean business. Edited August 7, 2021 by dollars 2 donuts

ColoradoBills Posted August 7, 2021 Posted August 7, 2021 Using the $43M average Josh will make $35,000.00 per snap of the football every year of his new contract. That's 1,229 snaps for a full 17 game season and playoff games. Great pay is you can get the work! 3

Johnny Hammersticks Posted August 7, 2021 Posted August 7, 2021 If Jeff Bezos gave every US citizen a billion dollars, he’d still have ~200 billion left to somehow eek through life. That’s the ***** that blows my mind. 1 2 1

Dablitzkrieg Posted August 7, 2021 Posted August 7, 2021 11 million is not that much. What am I missing?

The value of a Jim’s contract today is $18 million. The value of today’s Josh contract, if you were to do it back in 1986, would be $104 million dollars, even back then. The value with inflation and extrapolated would be waaaaaay more than $18 mill for Jimbo 1

I am willing to listen. although I did use the valuation of the dollar, based upon inflation. if you feel like it I’d be glad to see it. 4 minutes ago, Gugny said: Is this kind of like when OJ said he didn't kill nobody? My goodness, Gugny, using inflation from 1994, how many people did he kill in 2021 terms?! Edited August 7, 2021 by dollars 2 donuts 3

Dr. K Posted August 7, 2021 Posted August 7, 2021 (edited) I don't think you guys are comparing apples to apples. If you say Allen will make 43 million per year in 2021 dollars, that is 17.7 million per year in 1986 dollars. Was Kelly's 7.7 million dollars in 1986 his per year salary, or for the life of the contract? If it was 7.7 million per year, then Allen is making a little over twice as much per year as Kelly made.
