ALF Posted August 24, 2021 Posted August 24, 2021 Taliban say they won't allow Afghans to leave country, reject evacuation extension The Taliban said Tuesday that they were "not allowing the evacuation of Afghans anymore" and warned that the US must stick to next week's deadline to pull out, as a frantic Western evacuation operation at Kabul airport picked up pace. "The road, which goes to the airport, is blocked. Afghans cannot take that road to go to the airport, but foreign nationals are allowed to take that road to the airport," Mujahid said. "We are not allowing the evacuation of Afghans anymore and we are not happy with it either," he added. The doctors and academics of Afghanistan "should not leave this country, they should work in their own specialist areas," Mujahid added. "They should not go to other countries, to those Western countries." Many of those fleeing the country since the Taliban took over have been educated people, especially women https://www.cnn.com/2021/08/24/asia/kabul-airport-afghanistan-intl-hnk/index.html

Personally, I would wipe 50k from everyone’s Fed loans to stimulate the economy and allow people to put the private ones into bankruptcy. What I do know is that private (for-profit) colleges were using extremely predatory tactics going back to Bush in 2000, recruiting from military bases, making promises to poor people feeling trapped, etc. My gf used to work at ITT as a recruiter. She lasted about 6 months. She couldn’t sleep at night. ITT no longer exists. Those degrees are toilet paper. Theres dozens of other colleges that did the same thing. What are you doing for all of the people who already paid their loans to accredited universities? Or even non-accredited ones? Edited August 24, 2021 by Tenhigh

I guess you’ve never been to a non profit public school chancellor’s house… 😂 if you want to make an awful decision incurring tons of debt that will never deliver a return corrupt Government sponsored enterprise Navient (formally Sallie Mae) is happy to underwrite any stupid amount of money you want to borrow. Another unintended consequence of Uncle Sam “helping” as part of LBJs great society.

If I remember correctly you’ll find that it’s the head football coach at the state university in virtually every state in the union.

I think it needs to be thought out, which is why it hasn’t happened yet. 14 minutes ago, SoCal Deek said: If you really want to blow your mind, look up the list of highest paid state employees. In fact, I would separate those sports from universities altogether.

I don't think there is a decent answer, in reality. Not one that isn't politically motivated. Student loan forgiveness is essentially saying that there are no consequences to choices that you make. Trade your cow for some magic beans? Don't worry, the government gives you a new cow. Magic beanstalk grows from the beans resulting in a golden goose? Don't bother climbing, the government will just take it anyways to pay for the cow they are giving you. Let someone else climb.
B-Man Posted August 24, 2021 Posted August 24, 2021 Biden on live again. Can someone please increase the size of the font on the teleprompter ? His leaning forward and squinting as he reads doesn't really help his message. 1 2

I’m still not sure why you feel the need to let those with current loans should get a pass. Reasoning please. 13 minutes ago, Tenhigh said: I don't think there is a decent answer, in reality. Why do we need to alter it? 1

Why do we need to alter it? I can jump in here. I’m a creative bird, so I’m just spitballing now but I hope you can follow me. In your version Jim, people make decisions, receive value in your exchange for consideration, and when all is said and done, they live up to the terms of the bargain they entered into. How tedious. If that life was a movie, you have to ask yourself Jim, would you go to see it? Of course not. It lacks pop, tension, drama, protagonists, a hero, danger, and ultimately a Matt Damon, because Matty D ain’t showing up for that dog. Now in the Guv version, sure, people make choices and sure, people go through a UCLA or a Tulane or what have you, and sure many or most have jobs that would allow them to pay on their loans—but you introduce a bad guy, institutional greed, a comely exchange student, a game of hacky-sack at the Quad and zip zap zoop you got Nicholas Cage starring in a thriller fighting valiantly against Big ED. I see killers in blazers with those fancy elbow pads and mock turtlenecks, I see drunken encounters with spies posing as college recruiters, and damn if I don’t see @oldmanfan in a role as an unlikely hero of the cause—picking off bad guys with a sniper rifle while perched on the cat walk above the $500,000,000 football stadium built on the broken dreams of first gen college kids from Iowa. I guess what I’m saying is you buy the steak for the sizzle, right? Oh, and obviously, iron sharpens iron. Edited August 24, 2021 by leh-nerd skin-erd

There are Income Based Repayment plans. The borrower pays 10% of their monthly income after subtracting the poverty line. These plans usually bring the monthly payment way under the standard repayment amount, and they have forgiveness built into them. All principal and interest is forgiven after 20 years of payments working in the private sector. Or after 10 years in a not-for-profit / government / education job. But the payments need to be certified yearly or they don't count. Hundreds of thousands of borrowers recently discovered that the last 10 years of payments towards their forgiveness plan don't count bc they didn't get the right paper work in each year. Why they need hire people like me to do it right. Most also don’t know that the forgiven loan is taxable event at 10/20 year mark. They put a temporary (5 year) hold on that taxation recently.

But I got sucked into the student loan Convo. 1

I don’t even care that he’s holding the line in general, but now it looks like he’s getting strong armed and backing down to a bunch of war mongering ak47 toting cave dwellers stuck in the 9th century while the G7 is urging a thorough evacuation over expediency. I mean these guys are telling the greatest military force on the planet get out or there will be consequences?? Really? 1
