Other than that, it’s a perfect evacuation according to governor.

KABUL: Airport Gunfight.

A deadly gunfight broke out at Afghanistan’s main airport early Monday, with an Afghan guard killed and several others injured as US and German soldiers exchanged fire with unidentified gunmen, officials said.

The latest fatality at the troubled airport came just before 4:15 a.m. as Afghan security forces helping secure the base exchanged fire with the unidentified attackers, the German military said on Twitter.

CNN reported that a sniper outside the airport had fired at Afghan guards inside, who returned fire.

Sources told the outlet that in the confusion, US soldiers may have also shot at the Afghan soldiers — who are there to help the desperate scramble of thousands trying to flee Taliban rule — after the Afghans returned fire.

And Joe says we might need to extend the deal deadline and the Taliban say "no".   So this is likely to get very ugly.  Typically when you plan a retreat you want to deploy combat and security forces to guard your withdrawing forces from attack.  But not these clowns.  They abandon a secure air base, pull out all their military forces, and leave unarmed and vulnerable civilian populations behind.  And when realizing how badly they've screwed up resort to a risky strategy of having to re-insert the military back into the conflict.  And now the administration finds itself in a position of begging a savage and bloodthirsty medieval enemy for mercy in allowing their people out of the conflict zone.  The most embarrassing moment in American history.  But no worries some say.  Because it wasn't Joe's plan.  If anyone wants to use that excuse for total failure I hope it makes them feel better.

I feel the worst for those who trusted the us forces, welcomed them and worked with them. They now have a bullseye on themselves and their families.

and they aren’t taking prisoners…

US military gives Biden a deadline to decide on extending Afghanistan evacuations

The US military is advising President Joe Biden that he must decide by Tuesday whether to extend the evacuation in Afghanistan beyond August 31, according to a defense official directly familiar with the discussions, though Biden has yet to make a decision.

Military advisers have told the White House that the decision must be made by Tuesday in order to have enough time to withdraw the 5,800 troops currently on the ground, as well as their equipment and weapons.

If the President agrees, the military anticipates "a few more days" of trying to evacuate as many people as possible before the drawdown of US forces begins, possibly at the end of this week.

You’re assuming the chaos was inadvertent of course, but with Biden’s experience in foreign affairs one can never be sure.

You’re correct on what must be done to get the survivors out.  Step one is unfortunately to remove the top guy from his post.   There seems to be no appetite for doing so.

Too late…the Taliban already said they have ONE WEEK and then holy hell breaks loose. Nancy won’t even have formed the committee for over a month!

There's no way, after seeing what a disaster Kammy is, that she wants to invoke the 25th.

Afghanistan among others will give the House and Senate to the Republicans on a silver platter in 2022. Imagine if they made Trump Speaker of the House. I have to agree with Irv , what a mess.

As the Constitution does not explicitly state that the speaker must be an incumbent member of the House, it is permissible for representatives to vote for someone who is not a member of the House at the time, and non-members have received a few votes in various speaker elections over the past several years.

You'd think so.  But I still have faith the Republicans will manage to screw it up anyway.  Even if the worst possible scenario plays out in the next couple week.  Other than becoming fiscally responsible when they lose the majority and opposing lots of social issues pushed by the left what is their platform?  What vision are they going to lay out?   I've heard rumblings about running on the "law and order issue" and now using this Afghanistan disaster but then what?
