Nice piece in TheAthletic on Kumerow's journey: https://theathletic.com/2748457/2021/08/03/wr-jake-kumerows-journey-from-aaron-rodgers-secret-weapon-to-the-do-it-all-riser-of-bills-camp/

My favorite quote:

Quote

“I love my position here, I love this team here, I love this organization, so when it came chance that I could make it back here, it was a no brainer for me,” he said. “I wanted to be back with the boys, be on the Bills, be part of this tradition and this family.”

Yes, we know.  So are TBN articles.  A lot of other sites too.  Your point?

Back to the article:  I thought this part was interesting

The Bills have also heavily incorporated Kumerow, according to him, into all four phases of special teams. Additional functionality for a depth receiver is often critical. For an organization that backs up their press conference emphasis about special teams with roster actions, Kumerow’s prowess in that area could mean a lot on cutdown day.

“My position is a football player,” Kumerow said. “I like to be out there on any phase, whether it be offense or special teams. Whatever the team needs me to do. I enjoy playing special teams. Shoot, running down on kickoff is pretty fun…. especially when you make a tackle inside the 20, or even the guy next to you makes a tackle inside the 20. It just gets you fired up, ready to go.”

The 5th and especially the 6th WR pretty much have to play teams.  But I hadn't realized the Bills had subbed Kumerow in at Gunner:

Quote

By Week 9, when Taiwan Jones had to miss time with a hamstring injury, Kumerow stepped into Jones’ substantial special teams role in an essential one-for-one exchange.

That's very promising for him.  Just as a note, Taiwain Jones missed 2 weeks (9 and 10) but Kumerow kept getting ST snaps.

Equally useless.

You get what you pay for.  Try ponying up some coin once in a while as the articles you read about the Bills are researched and written by people who do that for a living.

If you're here to discuss Bills football, Welcome and get to it.

If you're here to complain about threads that link to paid online content (that would be most of the best bills media coverage these days), we've heard your complaint; Move On.

Hes one of the best blocking WR's in the NFL.

Considering we play a ton of 4WR sets hes a valuable asset to have in both the pass and run game.

I hope and think he sticks as WR6

I’m getting a scary sense Kumerow is our new guy on here, Dukes time is almost over and it seems Jake may be taking his place. (I kid I kid)

It sure sounds like he's in a decent position to make the final roster

Given his value on STs, I think that he's the odds-on favorite as the 6th WR (McKenzie is the 5th).  Hodgins would benefit from a year on the PS.

What took you so long?

I mean, when Kumerow was elevated off the practice squad Week 9 and remained on the roster for 6 games whilst Duke was still on the PS, shouldn't the Clue Bird have perched then?

I don’t recall seeing many threads for him last season. Seems to be a bunch popping up for this preseason. Makes sense since he’s performing well. It has the look he’s becoming a fan favorite ( besides the few who want him traded to Green Bay for a late round pick)

Oh, I "get it" now, you're talking about the role of Preseason Fan Favorite, not about actual chance to make the roster and stick around.

I think many of the people that wanted trade him, just had a feeling he was going to be the odd guy out and they’d prefer to get something for him than releasing him for nothing.

I don’t think it had anything to do with his play or that they didn’t want him. All indications from camp are that he’s doing really well and looking like a favorite for the 6th spot.

If he can make Taiwan Jones expendable AND actually contribute on offense, he’s close to a lock.

Agreed, especially since that allows the Bills to be more comfortable keeping Brieda over Jones.

I'll go further and say, at this point all signs point to Stevenson and Hodgins needing some time to develop (though it's early days and that could change).  The right place for them to develop is the practice squad, and I think most people know that....but are concerned that if we don't put them on the roster they'll get poached off waivers.

Well, they could.  But I think the rosters around the league this year are full of promising guys who need development, and given the virtual lead-up to the draft I think this year more than many, teams will be inclined to stay with the guys they've seen in camp and not go fishing elsewhere.

It’s not useless to me.  Thanks for posting it.  I read it and enjoyed it.  Great article.  Skip 4 cups of coffee and you can join in on the reindeer games
