It's pretty high up by Western NY standards and you can definitely see something. Shhh. It's Area 52.
Draconator
The most wild thing I've seen was up in the observation tower of Mt. Diablo near Oakland. Mt Diablo is in Walnut Creek. It's about 3700 ft in elevation. Once while in the observation tower on a clear day, I could literally see the curvature of the earth from well south of San Jose up well into the North Bay. Right along the Pacific Ocean shoreline. In the other direction I could clearly see Sacramento and even make out some peaks from the Sierra Nevada Range. sherpa
You need to be above about 45,000 feet to see the curvature of the earth. It is clearly evident at 50,000'. Mt. Diablo at about 3800' isn't going to get that view.
GaryPinC
Keep in mind this phenomenon also happens irregularly at all the great lakes and may account for some of the sightings in this thread: https://www.abc57.com/news/mirage-of-chicago-skyline-seen-from-michigan-shoreline 2
