Bush has been elected (the left says selected but sure ok). And yes the country was definitely divided over the election. It to me, was Ground Zero for our modern day political divide.....but I digress. Anyway I'm 22 and I'm just starting to really pay attention to DC and the political world. 9/11 happens. Defining moment of our times tho Covid is about to actually surpass it which is ridiculous. So now I wasn't just paying attention - I was fully immersing myself in politics, history, government, and the DC circus. I was all in. The unthinkable had just happened. The war begins in Afghanistan. And I swear to God to this day I'll take it with me to my grave it was one of Rumsfeld's first pressers and what I heard - That was the day I got 100% confirmation that I knew I was conservative.....and an American....always knew I had the instincts and leanings now it was all coming together and making sense. So the media starts pounding him with questions. Keep in mind this is about 1 month or so after 9/11 and there were people wondering what is taking so long to attack these mother ****. And what were those first questions? "Mr. Secretary there are reports that the U.S. is shooting at retreating troops on the battlefield....is this correct? What do you have to say about the reports the Taliban forces are trying to surrender and are being shot?" I couldn't freaking believe what I was hearing. I knew there was lib bias.....but this wasn't bias. This was flat out Un American. And right after 9/11 no less. The press is already demanding to know why we're killing bad guys on the battlefield. The look on Rumsfelds face was part disgust, shock, and completely dumbfounded. The press also alleged we bombed a hospital and were attacking civilians. Unreal and in a way jarring to me. Everything I heard about the press as being useful idiots coming true in real time. Anyway I didn't fully agree with the Iraq War..... I wouldn't have went in anyway I never bought the WMD stuff and knew that wasn't the reason they went in (guess I've always been a conspiracy theorist but it's not a conspiracy if it's a fact). No they went in hoping that there, in the heart of Mesopotamia, was a population clamoring for control of its own destiny and be done with dictators like Saddam, could self govern, join Western Civilization, and find some resolution to the Arab-Israeli conflict. That this could be the turning point that would end the violence and terror. Who knew that it would be Donald Trump to actually have it right some 15 years later. Anyway RIP to an American Patriot; If Colbert acted like this all the time I'd probably watch him. P.S. let this sink in. In that chair is the man the Left would probably call the most evil man in America along with Cheney up till 2016. Ok I can find a rationale for that at least. Somehow a businessman that attacked zero countries, did virtually nothing except cut your taxes, let businesses do business, appointed good judges......somehow that guy because he tweeted a lot has usurped all their anger and rage. If you want to go strictly by party breakdown though in the House 127 Dems, six Republicans, and one Socialist voted against it. Hint, wasn't those Dems you named. Do you understand that some people pushed for the war while others were politically cowradly and voted to authorize force? That's not too difficult to understand. The US was running a no fly zone combat air patrol that was getting shot at, and there was no way that was going to continue. That mission was going to end, one way or another. The US Intel services had nobody on the ground there. They relied too much on defectors that proved to be useless and self serving. Never did like the Bush II team and Mr. Rumsfeld was a key player. The WMD allegations was masterful in that Saddam would never disclose he had no such weapons as that admission would have emboldened his enemy Iran. While also peddling the idea Iraq was somehow connected to the 9/11 terrorists when it was obvious to anyone with just the slightest bit of knowledge all signs point to the Saudi's. It was deceit vs. deceit and set the stage for his demise and the deaths of 100,000 of thousands and the start of the migration of millions out of the Middle East to mostly Europe. And the US being stuck in Iraq for forever. And the removal of Iran's main obstacle to acting on their regional ambitions. All around a lot of bad consequences.
